When love has gone
bkoganbing2 January 2021
This short teleplay from Four Star Productions starred Ida Lupino as crippled woman whom we gradually learn is enduring a loveless marriage to TV's Jim Bowie, Scott Forbes. We learn quite a lot about both of them in the short running time.

Elements of the films Sorry Wrong Number and The Man With The Golden Arm are in this short drama. Lupino goes over the top and unrestrained in the climax.

For Ida's fans a must.

An entire 90 minute film clumsily shoved into 24 minutes.

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes "Four Star Playhouse" was a great show and sometimes it wasn't...and when it wasn't, often it was because they just tried to shove too much into the half hour time slot. This film is a good example of the latter.

When the film begins, a husband is doting over his invalid wife (Ida Lupino) and everything seems fine with the marriage. However, both soon begin talking to their friends and you learn that the marriage is an awful mess. The disabled wife apparently caused the injury to herself because she's unstable. You learn from her that she's actually faking the injury--or at least playing it up to punish and control the husband! This is a great setup, but there simply is too much story and the thing is way too contrived and rushed. Also, the acting, at times, by Lupino is rather shrill and overboard. It's not great...and could have been had is been more subtle and longer.

Excellent half-hour suspense film

Very well done half-hour drama that draws out the suspense through the final minutes. It is a relatively simple story, told from two different viewpoints in a compelling fashion. Top-notch effort from all-especially Ida Lupino, who not only put in an excellent performance but also provided the story.
