That's a cracking first episode.

Inspector Gamble and Sergeant Hicks are handed a case by CID, known lag Turbot is found with a bag full of cash, and a name, Jessie Stewart, wages clerk at a small family business.

I took a punt on this series, and I'll be honest, when I saw the name Robert Holmes in the opening credits, I knew it was going to be good.

Plenty of Robert Holmes hallmarks, great story, great character development, and very strong, central characters.

I've watched quite a few shows from the time, and I think it's fair to point out, that women police are often shown as lowly ranked, background players etc, how refreshing to see Sergeant Hicks, tough cookie, smart, very well acted by Joanna van Gyseghem.

Nicely produced, and actually very well acted, great to see Andrew Sachs pre Manuel. A few sound issues where the mic was perhaps too far away from the actors.

Patrick O'Connell is excellent as the central character, he's suave, smart, without being too over the top, he's not overly quirky.

Percy is a bit of an old letch isn't he, and as forward thinking as the show was, it still can't fully escape the attitudes of the time.

I'd the rest of the series is of the same standard, I'm in for a treat, 8/10.
