Rachel Horn and her date, Marcus, walk along the creek and talk about the outdoor concert Marcus is taking Rachel to. In response, Rachel tells Marcus that no one has ever invited her on a date before. Marcus says that he knows a shortcut and leads Rachel into the nearby forest. They run down the path and Marcus finally falls down, short of breath, and tells Rachel that she's a good runner. Rachel says that she wants to be a figure skater, and helps Marcus up. He kisses her, and then Rachel draws back and wonders why Marcus is with her when he's so popular he could have any girl at school that he wanted.
Marcus tells Rachel that he picked her very carefully, and starts to lick her ear. Rachel pulls away and says that they'd better get going before they miss the concert. He pulls Rachel back by the arm and says that they'll have their own concert, and violently kisses her. Rachel tells him to stop, and he says that he knows she wants it.
Three of Marcus's friends, Pete Burke, Ed Bell, and Scott Grant, emerge from the shadows and grab Rachel. One of them, Scott, grabs Rachel but hesitates despite the encouragement of the other three. When Scott doesn't do anything, Marcus yanks Rachel away from Scott. The other two hold the sobbing Rachel down while Marcus prepares to rape her. When she screams, Marcus draws a knife and tells her to shut up. Scott says that it wasn't how Marcus said it would be, and Rachel doesn't want to do it. Marcus tells Scott that they'll make her want to, and tells Rachel to relax and enjoy the ride.
Rachel knees Marcus in the groin as he tries to kiss her, manages to pull away from the other two boys, and runs away. They chase after her, and Rachel runs out of the forest and tries to wave down a car. The driver doesn't see her in time and runs her over, and the four boys run off., while Rachel lays paralyzed on the road.
Now
Rachel is in a powered wheelchair, paralyzed from the neck down. She's outside her home, and her mother Judith comes out and tries to get her attention. Judith tells Rachel to put the accident behind her and get on with her life, and Rachel wonders what life and leaves.
At Curious Goods, Johnny is going through the list of cursed antiques and asks Micki if she wants to look for the wheelchair or the umbrella. Johnny wonders why they have to pick them up immediately, and Micki tells him to take their hunt seriously.
Rachel and Judith go to a yard sale, and an Old Man offers Rachel an antique wheelchair. He says that he was like Rachel once--trapped in his own body--and the wheelchair healed her and can likely heal her. Rachel perks up, and the Old Man says that he's giving it to Rachel. Judith comes over and gives in to her daughter's wish to get the wheelchair.
Micki and Johnny return with the umbrella, and there's a telegram from Jack asking Micki to come to Europe and help him recover the Shard of Medusa. Micki tells Johnny to put the umbrella in the wheelchair and get the wheelchair. Johnny worries about doing it solo, but Micki says that he doesn't have a choice and packs to leave.
At home, Rachel looks at the figure skating award she won before the accident. Judith brings the antique wheelchair into the room, and helps her daughter into it. Rachel smiles for the first time in a while, much to Judith's relief, and Rachel says that she wants to sit by herself for a while. Her mother says that she has to work late that night, but Rachel just stares out the window and Judith leaves her to her memories of the attempted rape.
Rachel remembers the Old Man telling her that the wheelchair is special, and Rachel's hands and feet twitch on their own. Her astral form emerges from her physical body, and Rachel looks down on herself. Smiling, Rachel runs out.
Johnny pulls up at the garage belonging to the woman, Phyllis, who ran the garage sale. Phyllis says that she got rid of the wheelchair after her father, the Old Man, had a stroke and then recovered. She tells Johnny that she gave it to a paralyzed girl, and figures that she was nearby but doesn't know Rachel's address. The Old Man watches Johnny go.
That night, the four teenagers pull up to a teacher's office to steal the chemistry test answers. Pete is flunking chemistry and goes in to steal the answers. Someone moves in the dark, and Pete hears the noise but doesn't see anyone. He goes into the chemistry lab, and Rachel comes in and asks if Pete remembers her. Laughing, she cuts off his escape and says that normally she's in a wheelchair because of Pete and his friends.
Rachel tells Pete that she wants a confession. He throws a beaker of acid at her, and Rachel easily ducks it. She moves in on him, telling the police to say what they did to her. Backing away, Pete bumps into a rack of chemicals and knocks it down on himself. The acid in the containers melts half of his face, and Rachel stares in horror as the acid burns through Pete's body, killing him. She runs out as Pete screams in agony. The other three boys hear Pete's screams and run in, and find Pete dying. He mutters Rachel's name and expires. Marcus says that there's nothing they can do for his friend and should go, and the trio leaves.
Rachel runs out of the building, and comes to the waiting Old Man. He tells her that she did the right thing, and Rachel smiles and runs off as the Old Man smiles in satisfaction. Back in her bedroom, Rachel reenters her physical body Judith comes in and sees Rachel's hands twitching, and takes them as Rachel says that she can feel her hands. Mother and daughter cry in relief.
The next day, Rachel tells Judith that she doesn't want to be a guinea pig for the doctors. Judith disagrees and they argue, but Rachel insists. Her mother points out that she devoted every waking moment of her life to Rachel without her husband's help, but Rachel insists on doing it on her own. Johnny knocks at the door, and Judith goes to answer it. He saw the ramp for the wheelchair on the outside of the house, and asks if Judith purchased an antique wheelchair recently. Johnny offers her twice what Judith paid for the wheelchair, and Judith refuses to sell it or let him look at it since Rachel has become "attached" to it.
Rachel overhears Judith and Johnny talking, and takes her powered wheelchair to the window and watches Johnny go. He looks up and sees her, then gets in the car and drive away. When Judith comes upstairs, Rachel asks who Johnny is and Judith dismisses him as a man looking to buy antiques. Rachel apologizes for snapping at Judith earlier, and Judith smiles and asks if Rachel is feeling all right. Her daughter says that she wants to sit at the window alone, and has Judith put her in the antique wheelchair.
Johnny goes to the high school and asks the students if the know Rachel. Scott is nearby and overhears Johnny asking about Rachel, while a couple say that Rachel got hit by a car and was paralyzed from the neck down. Johnny notices Scott listening and asks if he's heard of Rachel, and Scott denies knowing anything about her. The couple advise Johnny to talk to Marcus and his friends, and point out that Pete died the other night when he fell into acid.
Scott gets into the Mercedes with Johnny, and says that a year ago some guys in his class tried to rape Rachel. He says that he was one of the guys, but insists that he didn't hurt Rachel and really liked her. Scott says that Marcus spearheaded the rape attempt, and Pete was one of them. He explains that Pete said Rachel's name before he died, and figures that Rachel is getting her revenge. Scott insists that he didn't touch Rachel, and Johnny reluctantly agrees to help Scott and gives him his card. Johnny asks where he can find Marcus and Ed.
Later, Scott is walking home when Marcus pulls up and asks if Scott wants to watch his next "date". He dismisses Pete's death as an accident, and figures Rachel talked to someone. Marcus says that they didn't push Rachel in front of the car, and they need to stick together because it's their word against hers. When Scott threatens to go to the authorities, Marcus grabs him and warns that if Scott snitches, he'll kill him. He tells Scott to come to Ed's place that night because there's a party there, and drives off.
That night, Johnny returns to the shop and goes over a high school yearbook. He finds a photo of Ed and gets his last name,
Johnny finds Ed's last name by looking in the high school year book and finding Ed's photo. "Ed" is not an uncommon first name, and Johnny has no idea what Ed looks like. There's no way Johnny could have identified Ed from his yearbook entry.
Ed takes a girl up on a rooftop of his apartment buildings and shows the stars to her. He tries to kiss her and she begs off. Something stirs the pigeons in a nearby pigeon coop, but Ed dismisses it as nothing and kisses the girl. The girl gives in, and the lights from the door come on. Ed goes over, figuring that it's Marcus, and the girl runs off. Rachel slams the door shut, locking Ed out, and emerges from the shadows on the roof.
Rachel talks about keeping the pigeons locked up, and knows how they feel. She asks if Ed wants to party, and Ed realizes that she killed Pete. He tries to run away and trips.
Johnny pulls up to the apartment.
Rachel cuts off Ed's escape, and he backs away in terror as she advances on him. He bumps against the ledge, falls over, and drops to his death. Rachel laughs, and Johnny runs up and sees her. Rachel's astral form disappears, and she reappears back in her bedroom and reenters her physical body. She can move more than she could after Pete's death, and Rachel calls to Judith. The Old Man is outside, and hears Rachel yelling.
Later, Marcus breaks into the Horn house and Rachel's bedroom, and confronts her before she can get to the wheelchair. He tells her that he's still waiting for his good night kiss.
Johnny pulls up outside.
Marcus grabs Rachel and covers her mouth.
The Old Man watches as Johnny breaks down the front door and goes inside.
Marcus throws Rachel on her bed, and says that he doesn't know how she killed Pete and Ed but it has to stop. When she denies everything, Marcus starts strangling her. Johnny comes in and throws Marcus off, and Marcus draws a knife and attacks him. Disarming him, Johnny holds the knife to Marcus' face and asks how bad he wants it. He tells Marcus to get as far away as he possibly can and lets him go. Marcus runs out, and Johnny asks Rachel if she's okay. She says that she is, and Johnny goes after Marcus and confirms that he's leaving the house.
Outside, Marcus sees the Old Man and walks past him, glaring. Meanwhile, Johnny goes back to Rachel's room and gets the wheelchair. She begs him not to take it away, and Johnny figures out that each killing gives her back more of her body. Rachel insists that the boys tried to rape her and are how she ended up crippled. She figures that the cost in lives is worth getting her body back, and Johnny tells her that she'll lose her soul. Rachel insists that she's only killing people that deserve to die, and the only justice is what she can get. Johnny insists that revenge is wrong and takes the wheelchair with him.
As Johnny goes, the Old Man confronts him and says that the wheelchair could do a lot of good. He explains that the wheelchair healed him after his stroke, and says that Marcus will come back because "his kind" never get the message. The Old Man tells Johnny that he can't look after another person's soul, and the rapists and Rachel made their choices. Johnny looks up at Rachel watching him from the window, and the Old Man tells Johnny that Johnny gains nothing by taking away Rachel's only chance at happiness. He asks to talk to Rachel, and Johnny gives him the wheelchair.
Later, Scott goes to the empty shop and comes in looking for Johnny.
At the Horn house, the Old Man sits Rachel in the wheelchair. She emerges from her body in her astral form, and the Old Man tells her to go heal herself. The Old Man's astral form disappears.
At the shop, Scott waits for Johnny to return. Rachel comes in and tells Scott that he doesn't need to be afraid of her. Scott insists that he was innocent, takes Scott's hand, and says that she wanted him to know there was nothing to be afraid of. Rachel tells Scott that she was only there because of Scott, and tells him that Marcus was right and she does want it.
The teenagers drop to the floor, and Rachel figures that it will be Scott's first time just like hers. She then fastens him down by his belt, stands up, and asks him how it feels being flat on his back and helpless. Rachel takes out Marcus' knife and says that he's worse than the others because he watched and did nothing. She cuts the support on a chandelier overhead, and it drops on Scott and electrocutes him.
Johnny comes in and sees Rachel standing over Scott's body. She turns ghostly and disappears.
At the Horn house, Judith looks at Rachel's physical body. When Rachel reanimates it, she starts when she sees Judith there. Rachel wonders where the Old Man is, and Judith asks what's going on. The teenager says that the wheelchair is making her better, and helps her go after the guys who crippled hr. Rachel can feel her legs and stands up, then falls into Judith's arms. Judith tries to pull Rachel out away from the wheelchair, and Rachel struggles with her.
Rachel pulls Marcus' knife and tries to stab Judith, and Judith bites her wrist. Marcus emerges from hiding and slaps Judith unconscious. Rachel crawls to the wheelchair in her bedroom, and Marcus says that she still loves him. He pulls her away before she can get into the wheelchair, and tries to kiss her. Rachel shoves him away, and Marcus shoves her into a dresser. She grabs a can of hair spray and shoots it into his face.
Getting into the wheelchair, Rachel tries to release her astral form. Marcus grabs the wheelchair and shoves it--and Rachel--toward the stairs.
Johnny drives to the Horn house to get the wheelchair and stop Rachel.
Rachel's astral form emerges from her body and strangles Marcus from behind with a phone cord.
Johnny arrives at the house.
Marcus collapses unconscious, and Rachel reenters her body. She isn't healed because she didn't succeed in killing Marcus. Johnny arrives and Marcus wakes up, and he shoves Rachel and the wheelchair down the stairs. Rachel grabs his wrists, and they both fall to their deaths. Judith wakes up and sees her daughter dead, and screams in grief.
Later, Johnny takes the wheelchair to the shop. The Old Man comes in and tells Johnny that that he's sorry about Rachel. Johnny tells him to get out, and the Old Man says that he can always find someone who can use it. He tells Johnny that the wheelchair will still be around after Johnny and he are gone, and there will always be somebody who will kill for the healing.
The Old Man goes, and tells Johnny that all he's doing is delaying the inevitable. Johnny grabs a fire ax and tries to hack apart the indestructible antique without success, as the Old Man laughs and leaves.
