A kind of irony occurs when Mr. Roland's sword is broken. The ease with which it is broken runs counter to the medieval Roland, who possessed a sword that could not be broken. The story and the legend are preserved in the 11th century "Song of Roland," which tells the tale of this 8th Century Frankish knight and his heroic exploits in the service of Charlemagne.
This is the second and final appearance Ellen Corby makes in the series, each time playing a different character, but a character that is similarly instrumental in helping Dr. Kimble elude arrest for another murder.
