Two-eyed Leela
Tweekums22 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Leela gets an invitation to her old orphanarium she is initially wary about going as she was bullied because of her one eye; she is persuaded to go though and while there meets Adlai Atkins, a man she knew as a child and he tells her she is a plastic surgeon and could fix her problem and give her a second eye. Fry is against the idea but she goes ahead with it anyway. Bender meanwhile has a new money making scheme; he will adopt a load of orphans for the money the government will pay him; he doesn't realise how much hard work children are though or how much they cost. Now she has two eyes and looks normal Adlai starts dating her and they decide to adopt a child of their own; differences of opinion soon arise though when Leela selects a child who isn't 'normal'.

This episode effectively had two stories; one about Leela's desire to be normal even if it meant giving up her most distinctive feature and the other about Bender and his plan to make money off the orphans. Leela's story had poignancy to it; and for once Fry was the voice of reason as he accepts Leela as she is. Bender's story however provided most of the laughs; mainly from is disreputable treatment of his orphans... behaviour such as only feeding them every other day and selling them to a Chinese restaurant! Adlai wasn't a great character but then he wasn't meant to be likable; he was too normal! It was nice to learn more about Leela's childhood although it wasn't a barrel of laughs; I liked how the show managed to have some serious themes as well as some good laughs.
