- Italy, 1943: After Allied forces have taken Salerno, war correspondant Conley Wright (Robert McQueeney) hooks up with an American company led by Captain Jim Benedict (William Reynolds). Among the various GI's with whom Wright becomes acquainted, one soldier, Private Jake Miller (guest star William Windom), stands out well above the rest. Eventually, the journalist learns of Miller's true identity -- a disgraced major who went AWOL in North Africa in order to re-enlist as an infantryman under an assumed alias. Wright struggles with his own instincts as a newspaperman to assist Miller's request that he keep his identity a secret from the rest of the men. Later, after a failed assault on German positions surrounding San Pietro, the veteran Miller offers strategic advice to the inexperienced Benedict, who is still unsure of his own abilities to command. Using Miller's suggested plan of attack, Benedict orders a second assault, which proves successful. Afterwards, however, the problem of Miller's true identity is resolved tragically.
