THE GALLANT MEN – Some Tears Fall Dry - 1962

"The Gallant Men" was an American television series that debuted on ABC in the fall of 1962. It followed a company of US soldiers from the Sept 1943 invasion at Salerno, and their battles up the toe of Italy. The series ran for a total of 26 episodes during 1962-63. Leading the cast is Robert McQueeney, who also narrates the story. McQueeney is a newspaper reporter who follows the company on their exploits. (Sort of an Ernie Pyle clone) The rest of the regulars are played by, William Reynolds, Robert Ridgely, Francis X Slattery, Eddie Fontaine, Roland La Starza, Roger Davis and Robert Gothie. There are the standard types sprinkled throughout, the joker, the card sharp, the loner etc. This is the 8th episode.

An American recon aircraft is shot down while flying over the front lines. The company sends a squad to see if there are any survivors. They have the bad luck to run into a group of German soldiers out likewise looking for survivors. A rapid exchange of gunfire is needed before the American side grabs up the two survivors. There is the wounded pilot, James Secrest, as well as female war correspondent, Gail Kobe.

Kobe is well known to the company war reporter, Robert McQueeney. He tells the company commander, William Reynolds, that, Kobe is a bad egg. It seems she will do anything for a story. Kobe is quickly shipped off to the rear with the wounded pilot, Secrest.

Later in the week, McQueeney is in Naples on some newspaper business. He runs into Kobe again at a party. The two argue again but then are drawn towards each other. They both need company. Now there is a German air raid. The two find a couple of orphan kids hiding out in a destroyed building. Then Kobe is killed by falling rubble after they rescue the two children.

This one is really not much of an episode. Except for the opening firefight with the Germans there is not much going on. It is the weakest episode so far.
