Melinda is haunted by the spirit of a dead artist...
Doylenf28 September 2009
A very interesting offbeat story in this series, has Melinda being haunted by the spirit of a dead artist (LIAM WAITE) who was hanged for committing murder. Much of the story takes place in an art gallery where the paintings are now owned by a corrupt lawyer (SCOTT PAULIN).

We soon discover that the sinister looking Paulin has taken over exclusive right to the paintings, until Melinda discovers that the artist has left 85% of ownership of royalties to his daughter, played by SAIGE THOMPSON.

What really helps these stories is the quality of the performances. LIAM WAITE (a cross between Josh Barnett and William Hurt) is excellent as the restless artist trying to get through to his daughter--and succeeding with Melina's help, and sinister looking SCOTT PAULIN as the man taking over ownership of the successful paintings.

A good entry in this series, with JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT and David CONRAD doing nicely as husband and wife.

Scary stuff

Warning: Spoilers
LAST EXECUTION concerns a man hanged for killing a romantic rival. The man happened to be a great artist, and there is a conflict over ownership of his paintings. His spirit has returned to set things right. Scarier than usual, this episode features the ghost as the hanged man, black hood and noose in place. He manages to scare Melinda and this viewer alike. Saige Thomson plays the man's daughter, a starving art student in possession of a single painting by her father while familiar TV actor Scott Paulin is the dead man's lawyer, who is in the process of shipping the bulk of her dad's paintings out of state. The ending is a pleasant surprise, but we have to contend with a ghost that can physically possess others, a rarity on this show.

Not Up to Snuff

Warning: Spoilers
This episode runs into an historical problem, as the last person hanged in the US was in 1936, and that was in Kentucky. Grandview is supposedly in New York, which had eliminated capital punishment long before.

The show does manage to establish the good guy (the artist) and the bad guy (surprise, surprise, a lawyer). But the real force here is one that culminates in the whole plot around Jim's death and resurrection: a ghost occupying the body of another. This theme is found in a number of episodes, almost as if the writers were leading up to the Jim story line.
