The Secret Life of Gidget
JordanThomasHall7 September 2017
It's Mr. Lawrence's (Don Porter) birthday and Gidget (Sally Field) wants to get her father the expensive camera he desires. She only has a week to come up with $77 and searches for a job. She overhears two attractive girls talking about what she assumes is a modeling job, but goes to the address to find its a Playboy-like Tomcat Club (what I believe is the KAOS set from "Get Smart"). She's directed to a new, innocent teenage club that's more like an ice cream parlor called "It's Kicks". She tells her father that she's babysitting at the Wallaces, but he finds that she isn't there. Gidget's sister Anne (Betty Conner) finds the application to be a kitty at the Tomcat Club and sways her father into thinking that's where she is. Mr. Lawrence goes inside and comically tries to act suave. Undeterred, he must now balance trusting his daughter and searching her out to question her.

GIDGE AT THE TOMCAT CLUB???
tcchelsey4 November 2023
Director Bruce Bilson did a solid of job of turning Gidget into a independent businesswoman --and fast. The endgame is to save enough money to buy her dad an expensive camera.

Ready, set GO!

As expected... there's a mixup as to what Gidget is doing away from home at night? She's supposed to be babysitting? Nope. Then there's the chance she may be working at the notorious Tomcat Club for swingers? No Way. But the name alone gets Professor Lawrence into the action, who proceeds to become a private eye.

Actually, Gidge is trying to get fast bucks hustling shakes at "Kicks," an ice cream joint. Beware of the complaining customers!

By the way, is it all a coincidence the group Paul Revere and the Raiders had a big hit at the time called KICKS? Number 4 on the Top 40 charts.

I agree with the last reviewer it looks like one or two sets from GET SMART were borrowed and used for the interiors of the Tomcat Club. Watch for Richard Bull as the maire 'd, who later would appear in many episodes of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and co-star on LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE as Nels.

In the retail department: the expensive cam costs $79.95 which would equal $900 smackers today. Good luck with that! That's a lot of shakes and sundaes she has to hustle.

Bilson at the time was also directing the PATTY DUKE SHOW, later to master HOGANS HEROES.

Nicely done by the cast, and slightly more dramatic at times. SEASON 1 EPISODE 27 remastered dvd box set.
