A great way to subvert the expectations

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, I did not expect that twist but, somehow, it feels like it is the most appropriate direction that this story should take at this point.
After a very long winstreak, Reinhardt finally gets to pay the price for his success. No victory is without loss - every hero has to face hardships, rising challenges and failures, so that they can become stronger later on. Losing Kircheis is a tragic and yet quite an appropriate twist. I'm surely going to miss him, but my interest in this story has substantially grown after this episode.
I can finally see why many people consider Legend of the Galactic Heroes to be the "Game of Thrones" of anime.
