Bird Scarers and iron stoves test Barbara's patience
Scaramouche200413 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Barbara starts to feel the pressure in this episode, as she is left singlehandedly to clean and scrub a newly acquired rusty cast iron range/stove/wood burner.

Having acquired the range from a rag and bone man in preparation for the day they would have their utilities cut off, Tom helps with the range for all but thirty seconds before he becomes preoccupied with the next self sufficiency headache....the birds that are eating all his newly planted seed.

After several unsuccessful ideas from Count Basie blasting from a tape recorder, rattling tin cans and Scaracrows, Tom seems destined to wrestle with this problem forever, little realising that Barbara is getting to the end of her patience scrubbing the huge black hulk in the kitchen.

The Weaker Sex?

Tom is a sucker for the wares collected by Sam, the rag and bone man. Especially one who has an ancient range cooker and a patter in cockney rhyming slang.

Only the range cooker might cut down on electricity bills. It has dripping dried over from the Victorian era.

It is left to Barbara to scrub it clean. So much so her clothes are ruined.

While Tom tries to figure out how to scare the birds in his garden. They are eating his crop. Eventually Barbara loses her rag. Feeling unappreciated and getting no help from Tom.

As she seeks solace from Margo. Barbara finds that Margo is arguing with Jerry over the crummy clothes she has had to wear. Her clothes are much more expensive than anything Barbara wears.

Tony Selby plays Sam, the rag and bone man who is posher than he makes out to be.

Interesting to note that Tom was worried by rising electricity bills. It was an issue in the mid 1970s.
