This episode hints of an objectionable subject matter.

Perhaps it was me but this was a strange little episode as hints of taboo subjects were provided that included some improper relations between a father and her daughter. The first half of the episode, with its uncomfortable subject matter, seemed like a show of its own as Matt is placed in the middle of a situation that just did not seem right.

It begins when a teenage girl named Trudy Trent comes into the Marshal's camp one evening. She has run away from her father and is on her way to Dodge. The Marshal believes there is nothing else for him to do but return the girl to her father and they set out for the Trent farm.

While Matt is visiting with the father, Asa Trent, there is some indications that the relationship between daughter and father is more like a married couple. Matt perceives that the situation is not correct and tells Trudy that he will take her to Dodge.

But when the Marshal gets Trudy to Dodge she is more than a handful as she becomes smitten with the much older law man (similar to her father situation). When Matt does not return the same affection, Trudy will go as far as telling falsehoods to get her way.

Anne Helm, that played Trudy, does a fine acting job as she made her character come to life. Even James Arness seemed refreshed in this program as he had more involvement than we have seen in a few shows. Even with the strange subject matter, the show was still entertaining. And by the end of the episode it appears all things have returned to normal in the Kansas town.

A Foolish, Little Girl

(*Trudy Trent quote*) - "You shut up, pa. He's staying the night."

Trudy is the abused, teenage daughter of lecherous drunk, Asa Trent.

When Trudy runs away from home she happens to cross paths with Marshal Dillon and she asks him to help her to get away from her miserable father.

Dillon brings Trudy to Dodge only to find out that she has an obsessive crush on him.

Flimsy Episode

Warning: Spoilers
Yeah Anne was quite fetching in her jeans but I wonder how she could look so clean and well groomed living with a no count drunk.

I was rather perplexed how Trudy could be so mature and still be called a kid. Granted she was obviously a victim of incest but wonder why she waited so long to leave and how did she survive with that guy. Casting was off as Anne Helm was way too beautiful and too old as a dirt farmer's daughter with gorgeous teeth and someone like Colin Wilcox (Mayella in Mockingbird) or anyone a bit more homely could be more believable. There were plenty of plain looking girls under contract.

The way she became a rebellious wildcat was expected but all in all she was a victim of her upbringing and this type of subject matter was unusual for '61 but definitely needed more time to understand her character. Of course the episode wouldn't have the same appeal with the guys with a plain Jane.
