- Caleb, a 43 year old farmer, feels like a failure and his shrew of a wife confirms his opinion. They were married because she was with child which died. Caleb wanted other children but is wife says they'd just be more of a burden and more mouths to feed. Caleb thinks life is passing him by and he doesn't count for anything so he goes into Dodge to see Marshal Dillon. Unfortunately Matt is away escorting a prisoner so Caleb hangs around town. While drinking a beer with a saloon girl he has a run in with the brother of a man Matt arrested for murder and who was subsequently hung. Caleb inadvertently embarrasses the man in front of the entire Long Branch Saloon and word spreads. The man publicly accosts Caleb and makes him back down. While hanging around town Caleb's dog, his only true friend, comes into town searching for him. Caleb is excited to see his buddy and are sitting down on the street when Matt returns to town. Matt has his bedroll in his hands with his rifle when Caleb steps up to tell him how much he admires Matt and wishes he was more like him. At the same time the murderer's brother steps out of alley with his revolver in his hands and tells Matt he's going to kill him for what he did to his brother. Matt doesn't stand a chance with his hands full but as the man fires, Caleb steps in front of Matt and is fatally shot. As he lies dying his dog comes up and puts his head on his chest. Caleb pets hims and his dying words were "Dog, dog, dog." The saloon girl comes up to Matt and tells him why Caleb was looking for him.
