Creepy Uncle Hutch
Johnny_West12 April 2020
Martin Nagle & his wife Nancy move to Dodge to open a general store and give nasty Jonas a run for his money. Martin is played by Harry Lauter, who was on Gunsmoke nine times, and also worked with James Arness on the TV series "How the West Was Won," and was on almost every Western TV show of the 1950s-1960s. Nancy is played by Dorothy Green, who had the personality of a paper bag, and just stood around like a mannequin. Green was on Gunsmoke three times. She also worked with Morgan Woodward and Hugh O'Brien on The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp.

Richard Rust plays their son, Lee, and he was a handsome actor who looked like he was going to be a star, back in the 1950s. Rust was on Gunsmoke three times, and on various other Westerns. His Uncle Hutch was played by Gene Nelson, who was on Gunsmoke three times. His last TV appearance was on an episode of Murder She Wrote, in 1987.

Martin, Nancy, and Lee are ready to open their store and start a happy and successful life in Dodge City when Uncle Hutch shows up and ruins everything. Any time a long-lost family member shows up on a TV show, murder usually follows.

In this episode, Richard Rust delivers an excellent performance as the son who is devastated by his Father's death, and cannot get anyone to support his suspicions that Uncle Hutch is a killer. Before long, Mom is warming up the bed with Uncle Hutch, and the sullen son (Rust), is being sent away to Saint Louis. As a viewer, I was getting very aggravated at how the cards were all being stacked against the good son Lee (Rust). But that's where the fun begins, and all hell breaks loose in Dodge.

While most of this episode leaves Matt Dillon and Chester looking from the sidelines, Dillon is there at the crucial climax. This is a very good episode, but Doc Adams and Miss Kitty are barely in it, and I always miss them when they are not in the thick of things.

It's All in the family

Affable Uncle Hutch arrives unexpectedly just as prosperous brother Martin and grouchy son Lee open a new store in Dodge. Then Martin is killed by falling barrel of nails leaving Lee and attractive wife Nancy grieving. Lee doesn't trust Hutch and even suspects him of having something to do with Dad's death, especially when Hutch starts cozying up to widow Nancy. So what's the real story.

Good episode that generates considerable suspense as we try to figure out true motives. Then too, Hutch (Nelson) is likable whereas son Lee (Rust) has a perpetual scowl. Also, The train sequence amounts to an unexpected twist. Good payday for veteran cast including the always reliable Harry Lauter (Martin). Nothing special, just another solid entry in an outstanding series.

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Yup, admit it. Y'all knew right off when old Hutch showed up that something bad was gonna happen. Now, I used to own a "Hutch" basketball when I was a kid, and as I remember it, it had a real cool red dot in the middle of the label. It was okay, but not as good as the Wilson leather one I got the next year. Oh, well... Two of the most prolific of all the character actors had significant parts in this oater; Dabs Greer, and Roy Barcroft. These guys were in a LOT of stuff, and their contributions are still noticed today, long after their passing. (R.I.P., Gentlemen).

Now, as far as another reviewer's observation goes; absolutely correct. They just had so much time to play with, and in this case, the end wraps up a little too fast. I'm still giving it a 10.

Family counseling will be needed at the conclusion of this show

A new family arrives in Dodge with the mindset of opening a new General Store right on Front Street. Martin and Nancy Nagle along with their son Lee, are set to open the store within a few days. Just about the time the store is to open Martin's brother, Hutch Nagle, comes into town to see how things are going. From the very start, the son Lee is very suspicious about his Uncle Hutch.

Soon an accident happens at the store and Martin in killed when a barrel falls from the loft. Lee believes that his Uncle planned the entire situation to kill of his father and then marry his mother. But it seems that no one believes the young buck when there is no evidence to support his claim.

The story is not bad but there is much in this episode that just did not add-up to a believable story. It appears that the writer had to take liberties as the story ended in a very rapid and awkward manner under unrealistic procedures. I found fault with more than one person in this 'weird family' concept.
