Good, but probably a knock-off.

Warning: Spoilers
On September 21, 1967, the TV show "Dragnet" aired a program called "The Shooting Board". In it, Joe Friday is off duty when he stumbles upon a guy rifling through vending machines at a laundromat. When Friday tells the guy to halt, the guy pulls a gun and shoots at Joe. Joe responds by firing back--killing the youth. However, the girlfriend of the assailant hides the gun and blames Joe for murder! And, at first, they can't find the gun and can't find the bullet the dead man fired--and it looks like Friday might be in SERIOUS trouble.

On November 8, 1968, the TV show "Hawaii Five-O" aired a program called "...And They Painted Daisies on His Coffin". In it, Danny Williams is off duty when he stumbles upon a guy stripping parts off someone else's car. When Danny tells the guy to halt, the guy pulls a gun and shoots at Danny. Danny gives chase and eventually one of Danny's stray bullets kills the youth. And, at first, they can't find the gun and can't positively say that they dead man fired--and it looks like Danny might be in SERIOUS trouble.

Some say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, though I'd say this episode was stolen from "Dragnet"...or at least "heavily inspired" by the other show! The plot ideas are identical in most every way. However, since "Hawaii Five-O" is a one hour show instead of half an hour (like "Dragnet"), they had to add some other plot elements to fill it out and make it workable in the time format. So, the process of locating the girlfriend (who took the gun and ran when her boyfriend fell) took much of the show and there was a subplot involving McGarrett getting the goods on "Big Chicken"--a major narcotics dealer played by Gavin MacLeod(!) of all people! Fortunately, these additions really did work pretty well. Plus, even though the story was stolen (and who knows, maybe "Dragnet" had done the same), it was interesting and entertaining.

By the way, MacLeod would return as Big Chicken once again in the next season in an episode called "The Box".

Gavin McLeod as the Big Chicken!
Sylviastel1 September 2017
Long before the Mary Tyler Moore show and the Love Boat, Gavin McLeod played Big Chicken, a sleezy criminal who has a blonde girl junkie and her boyfriend stealing for him. Gavin's performance is still central to the plot. Danny Williams has been arrested for the shooting death of the boyfriend also a runaway. Like most Hawaii Five O original episodes, the writing is superb and the plot slowly unfolds to uncover the case.

Danno gets booked for a change
AlsExGal4 September 2023
Detective Danny Williams sees a man trying to break into a car when he's off duty. The man runs, and Danny pursues him through the streets. The man turns and shoots at Danny a couple of times, then heads up to his apartment and barricades himself inside. Danny tells him to open the door, tries the door to find it locked, then shoots the lock off. He then opens the door to see he's fatally wounded the alleged thief when he shot the lock off, who turns out to be only 18 with no rap sheet. Danny doesn't notice a girl in the corner of the room who picks up the boy's gun and leaves. So this leaves Danny with a couple of beers in him, having shot an 18 year old with no record and seemingly unarmed. McGarrett believes Danny's story, but he needs hard proof. But in the meantime, Danny is indicted for first degree murder and jailed.

This episode initially aired two days after the presidential election of 1968, so it is interesting to look at it in that context. That was an election in which nobody got a majority of the votes and almost got thrown into the House of Representatives, an election in which George Wallace, when he was still a segregationist, actually won some electoral votes and 13% of the vote.

What McGarrett says about cops being heavily and even unfairly scrutinized when they shoot somebody was true then and true now, but it is hard not to notice how everybody - including the press - is more than willing to believe the worst about Danny and this shooting. The US was in the middle of the first "soft on crime" period of time that only led to more crime in the 70s and 80s, because people often forget that which you subsidize you get more of.

Also note that Gavin McLeod who will have long time positions on TV first as Murray in the Mary Tyler Moore show and then Captain Stubing on The Love Boat is playing a slimy drug dealer here named "Big Chicken". The episode does not disclose how he got such a nickname.
