Aside from a little bit of psychic detective work, a pretty good episode.

Warning: Spoilers
First off, you need to know that psychics are NOT a theme in the show and no psychics are even shown in "A Hawaiian Nightmare". I said 'psychic detective work' because it seemed as if McGarrett was psychic, as he suddenly made a HUGE and highly accurate guess that seemed out of left field--and this makes the episode rather weak.

The show begins with three guys planting explosives around the volcano fields on the Big Island (Hawaii). Suddenly, the boss kills the two helpers--and it's pretty obvious that he's niceness-impaired. It turns out this guy (familiar TV character actor James Olson) is in debt to the mob and he's come up with a scheme to extort $500,000 out of the State NOT to detonate the fields (thus causing a river of lava to roll into the city of Hilo). And, considering he is a demolitions expert and has the know-how to pull it off, things look bleak. There is a monkey wrench in his plan, however, as his wife (Sheree North) has her own plans...

Twice McGarrett makes a couple deductive jumps. The first time isn't a huge jump--but it's a jump when he VERY quickly decides that Olson must be the extortionist who sent the letter to the Governor. The big one, however, is late in the show when the military and Five-O must disarm the many bombs planted across the park. Just before Danno (is there NOTHING he can't do--an expert at munitions, a marksman and a darn fine cop!) is about to disarm the trigger, McGarrett wildly guesses out of left field how to stop the device! Heck, it was also VERY likely that what he did should have triggered the device or had no effect at all--but, this is TV, so you know they aren't going to wipe out a city--making it a bit anticlimactic. Still, the plot is inventive and interesting.

The World is Ending

Warning: Spoilers
The clock is ticking on the detonator, half the island is going to blow, there are only minutes left, the situation is tense, what's McGarrett do? He picks up the TV remote and starts watching TV. Too funny. Who writes this stuff?

Sheree North ugh
zappaman-693827 May 2020
After a couple of minutes of hearing her screech you're begging her husband to whack her. I can't think of a more annoying noise to ever seep from the tv set.

Brilliant, in Every Way

I have seen every episode, in all twelve seasons, and this one, five times.

James Olson is always good, but this was one of his best. Sheree and Felix are great also.

Great director, plus intense and frequent cinematography, and many absolutely terrific helicopter scenes. The sounds of the chopper, seems to be right in your living room.

This is one of the top 5 episodes, in all 12 seasons.

The writing is the best it gets.

Excellent

I have seen this one, 8 times.

The deduction by Steve McGarrett, as mentioned by another reviewer, was anything but " psychic ".

In fact, as shown, was carefully, and methodically through through, with police skills.

He carefully thought about this, and deliberated in his mind, four times.

The situation was in fact, the most likely, given the overall nature of Professor Brown.

Sheree gives a good performance. Felix always does, and we get to see the Governor.

Outstanding cinematography.

A Hawaiian Nightmare

Warning: Spoilers
While this one is a step down from the fantastic season opener, it's still very good. Love all the wiring of the explosives at the Volcanoes National Park at the start, all to the tune of a very cool Morton Stevens cue! This is the second of James Olson's 5 appearances on the show. His relationship with his wife Sheree North is interesting. And again the top expert in the field that is working with Five-O on the case is the mastermind himself. For whatever reason I always thought the garage opener remote control at the end to stop the explosives was ridiculous, even as a kid. I guess it's not so much the garage opener that's ridiculous (I suppose it could operate on the same frequency as the bomb) but the fact that somehow McGarrett is able to mentally flashback to the garage opener and somehow figure out that that's the remote for the bomb. I mean why would that be a clue? Were garage openers not common back then? Was it something too unique and therefore was a tip-off? I don't get it. I know that McGarrett was running out of time and basically grasping at straws but the fact that he thought about the garage door opener and it actually WORKED seems far-fetched to me. Other than that it was a very good episode.

Garage door opener

A Hawaiian Nightmare is the first Hawaii Five-0 episode I remember watching in prime time. I was 13 at the time.

The plot isn't realistic much like Season 6's A Bullet for El Diablo. You can't set off a volcanic eruption as it is portrayed in this episode.

Sheree North is also one of the series most annoying female guest stars. McGarrett getting advice from a bad guy has been done before and will be done again before Five 0 finishes. On the plus side- This is one of the few times the Big Island is featured on the series.

600 characters for reviews now? This is simply idiotic, Imdb!!!!!!!!!!!

Three times for the same premise?
VetteRanger17 March 2023
Twice in the previous season, and two times within three shows, McGarrett called on an expert who just happened to be behind the crime in progress. The writers needed a new idea. If this episode stood alone without that rehash premise ... maybe I'd give it more than four stars.

However, it also involves an unbelievable "crime" ... explosive charges set and designed to unleash a volcanic flow. With some stock film images to make lava flow look very hot and scary, off they set to confuse a viewer with the idea the bad guy could wipe a city off the map.

I didn't buy the crime, and I certainly didn't buy McGarrett's sudden inspiration to save the day.

I generally like the series
pmicocci-1890821 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
But, frankly, the premise of this episode just seems siñly. The idea that 15 or 20 tons of dynamite could provoke a catastrophic volcanic eruption rings completely false. A volcano can contain a great many megatons of explosive force, and the amount of explosives proposed wouldn't even be a minor fart by comparison. Also, the idea that a crew of seven or eight could fix 15 or 20 tons of dynamite in such a short time seems unrealistic as well.

The whole plot seems very weak and farcical.
