The criminal opens the case holding the $30,000 revealing stacks of five-dollar bills, and twenty-dollar bills. There appeared to be many more fives than twenties, but even if there were an equal number of each it would require 2,400 bills. That would be 1,200 of each denomination. They are banded in what appears to be the standard 100 bills per pack, so there would have to be 24 packets. The case was holding no more than half that number.
When the taxi with the Russian with the ransom money is a few hundred feet away, one of the criminals sitting by the window looks out and says there he is, to which the three criminals get up and walk over to a pay phone on the wall.
The criminals didn't know what the Russian looked like, nor what kind of vehicle he would be in. In addition, the taxi was too far away for any of them to see who was in the back seat. It would be impossible for any of them to glance out at the taxi a few hundred feet away and know the Russian was in it.
