"The Contest" is an exciting episode that begins with two men disguised as Hawkeye and Chingachgook, wearing masks as they rob Seneca braves. When the real duo show up with furs to trade for Travis (Brendan Dillon, first of two), he tries to detain them for the authorities, only to have his head dumped in flour while they escape. The only way to clear themselves is to consult Seneca Chief Wandara (Ed Holmes, last of four), whose son Negus (Lee Crawford) believes them innocent. The real thief is Stark (James Barron, second of three), aided by Seneca henchman Anoki (Don Garrard, third of four), brazenly accusing Hawkeye and Chingachgook right in front of Wandala. The shocking murder of his son Negus, presided over by the medicine man (Eric Clavering, first of three), incites the Seneca Chief to declare a contest of three challenges between Hawkeye and Stark following three days of fasting. It's a tense battle, as the cheating Stark easily gains the upper hand over his weakened opponent, until Chingachgook convinces Anoki of his blood brother's prowess with the long rifle.
