Burton loathed his appearance on this show and especially the way Lucille Ball told him and his wife how to play comedy.
This show used the publicity that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor achieved when Richard bought Elizabeth a very expensive diamond ring worth over a million dollars that the character Lucy then got stuck on her finger.
When the closeup of the Taylor-Burton Diamond is shown, one can tell that the setting is different from the studio's set. That is because the show's insurance wouldn't cover the cost of showing the diamond at the studio (e.g., if it were lost or stolen), so another shot had to be done at a different, more secure location.
Burton's experience shooting this episode left him fuming, and filled with contempt towards Lucille Ball. In his diary he wrote of her, "She is a monster of staggering charmlessness and monumental lack of humour...I loathed her the first day. I loathed her the second day and the third. I loathe her today but now I also pity her. After tonight I shall make a point of never seeing her again. We work, or have worked until today which is the last thank God, from 10am to somewhere around 5pm, and Milady Balls can thank her lucky stars that I am not drinking. There is a chance that I might have killed her."
First of two episodes directed by Jerry Paris who is best known as Rob Petrie's neighbor and friend Jerry Helper. Paris was a prolific director with numerous credits to his name including 84 episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
