Matthews accuses Thornton of keeping his mouth shut in prison for 13 years so he could collect half a million dollars ($500,000) when he got out, which Matthews figures is $70,000 per year for the time he was in prison, or just over $35,000 if he had a partner. $500,000 divided by 13 is $38,461.53, not $70,000.
The bank manager describes Herbert Stewart as, "fifty-three or -four (years old)". But when Matthews gives Sergeant Morse the information to broadcast an APB, he describes Stewart as, "about five-three or five-four [in height]".
In the early scene when Sgt Garvey talks to Mathews on the radio he holds the Polytronics microphone backwards. The hanger button is on the front (speaking side) of Polytronic microphones and Garvey is talking into the back side. The grill and hanger button can be seen facing out toward the camera.
Matthews arrests Thornton for having a gun which he tells him is illegal for him. While it is true that convicted felons cannot carry guns, Thornton is innocent and will be declared so making the gun charge meaningless, something Matthews would know.
