A Little on the Bizarre Side
Hitchcoc7 August 2021
There are several things that hold our interest. First of all, it is discovered that Howard's ability to survive for eleven days without food and water is highly suspect. Of course, he was with another man and that man died early on. You can figure it out. Buntz is suspected of skimming money in a drug bust. J. D. Has a guy attempt to shoot him in the face but the gun misfires three times. This drops him into depression and, sadly, he has no one to call for help.

Warning: Spoilers
Hunter (a fine James Sikking) is found after spending eleven days in a collapsed basement. This story takes a grimly funny after after it's revealed that Hunter ate human flesh in order to survive. Fortunately, Furillo (the terrific Daniel J. Travanti) convinces Hunter not to tell the public about this.

LaRue (an excellent Kiel Martin) almost gets shot in the face. This particular plotline culminates in a poignant scene in which LaRue breaks down crying because he has no one in his family to talk to, so his partner Washington (ace work by Taurean Blacque) comforts LaRue by giving him a hug.

Goldblume (sturdy Joe Spano) has his first short story published. The highlight for this one is Renko (a funny Charles Haid) taking issue with being described as fat in Goldblume's story.

Buntz (the fantastic Dennis Franz) is suspected of keeping and selling a kilo of cocaine. It's sad to see Buntz go down, but at least Sid (a perfectly smarmy Peter Jurasik) pledges loyalty to Buntz. Moreover, Bryan Cranson has a neat small role as a lawyer who gives some legal advice to Buntz.

Martinez (a delightfully fiery portrayal by Trinidad Silva) almost starts a gang war when he claims his little sister was kidnapped by a rival gang. This story reaches a pleasing peaceful resolution.

Flaherty (likeable Robert Clohessy) hooks up with Grace Gardner (the ever-sultry Barbara Babcock). These two make for a hot couple.

Hill Street at its Best
rdms87-149-61207230 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A lot going on in this penultimate episode of the series. Two storylines were particularly touching for me and explain why even after decades, Hill Street led the way in showing how cops live and work. Since Amazon Prime released all of the series a few months ago, I have been rewatching it, and it doesn't disappoint.

Kiel Martin, as JD LaRue, comes close to death, saved only by a pistol that misfires when pointed at him. For a brief moment, JD experiences an artificial high and a feeling of being invincible. Then, reality sets in and his loneliness and sadness burst through. The late Kiel Martin never garnered the acting awards others in the cast earned, and he is just as good here.

Dennis Franz was a later addition to the Hill. He's being framed for a drug theft and fighting back as best he can. Franz later went on to another groundbreaking series, NYPD Blue, making history there as the linchpin of arguably the best cop show ever made for US television.

Rating = 10.
