Hogan and crew make a model of the German battleship "Bismarck" for the movie to be given as a gift. Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, it was sunk May 27, 1941.
Major Buckles and Sgt Schultz are both holding a model of the battleship Bismarck and Sgt Schultz breaks the model in half. Although it was unknown at the time of filming, Robert Ballard's underwater expedition years later that found the actual wreck of the battleship Bismarck discovered that her stern had indeed broken off.
The film of the B-17 crash landing at the beginning is footage from the show 12 O'Clock High (1964).
