- The Gestapo sets a trap for the elusive underground agent known as 'Papa Bear' (Hogan) and Newkirk gets caught.
- At the start, LeBeau is out in front of Barracks 5 at night. He is behind Schultz, fanning a pan of apple strudel with the pan lid. This gets Schultz's attention. LeBeau asks Schultz if there is anything new. As a searchlight goes past them, Schultz points his rifle at LeBeau, who holds up his hands, one with the pan and the other with the lid. Schultz says that there are no patrols inside or outside the wire, but Klink is going to make bed-checks tonight. Meanwhile, Hogan, Carter, Newkirk, and Kinchloe are in the barracks making plans to go to a meeting with Underground agents, named North Star. Hogan volunteers Newkirk to go to the meeting instead of him. He wants Newkirk to listen to the plans, take notes, and bring them back.
Newkirk goes out of the tree stump tunnel entrance, and takes cover when a searchlight passes nearby.
In the barracks, Klink and Schultz are doing bed-checks of the prisoners. Hammond is there; so is O'Brien, Mills, Kinch, LeBeau, Carter, Newkirk .... Hogan is in Newkirk's bunk. Klink orders lights on, and wakes everybody up. Hogan says that Newkirk is in Hogan's office with a cold. Klink goes to Hogan's office, and hears snoring. This is actually a record on a record player playing snoring noises.
While this is going on, Newkirk goes to the meeting with the Underground, with agents Franz, Gunther, Mira, and Wilhelm, collectively known as North Star. After they talk a bit, 3 Gestapo men, 1 officer and 2 enlisted, break in. Wilhelm tries to escape, and the officer shoots at him, but he seems to get away. Newkirk and the others are taken prisoner.
Back in the barracks, Hogan wonders where Newkirk is, he should be back by now. LeBeau says that Schultz is coming. Schultz tells Hogan that Klink wants to see him - Newkirk did not answer roll call. Hogan says that he still has a cold. LeBeau gives Hogan a thermometer, which he hurriedly heated up. Hogan looks at it and says that Newkirk's temperature is down to 102. Schultz wants to see Newkirk; Hogan takes Schultz to his office door. Schultz looks in, and sees a lump in a bunk that is supposedly Newkirk, and he still hears the snoring, which is loud. As Schultz is leaving, the snoring record runs out, and the record changes; it is a Tommy Dorsey song. Schultz and Hogan leave.
In Klink's office, Hogan, Klink, and Schultz talk about Newkirk. Hogan says that the music was from the next hut, and he got them quieted down. Klink asks Hilda to call STALAG 4 for a doctor. Hogan talks about breaking up Klink's command. Klink tells Hilda to cancel the call; Newkirk is to have chicken soup every hour, intravenously if necessary.
Newkirk and Mira are in a Gestapo cell, The Gestapo takes Mira; Newkirk wants to go with her, gut the Gestapo won't let him. Mira sends a message on the emergency wavelength - under the eyes of a Gestapo agent. Kinch gets the message and calls Hogan, replies, and asks to send the message again in 5 minutes. Mira is actually a Gestapo agent, trying to catch Papa Bear. The message is that there was a trap at Webers' Farm, sent from North Star. It was sent again, with the same hand sending the message. Hogan has Kinch send back a message, rendezvous at 2400 hours, give their code names. Hogan tells Carter and LeBeau to bring them in, says to play it safe. LeBeau asks 'Is there any other way?' The message is sent again; the same as the first time, nothing added. Hogan looks puzzled.
In the Gestapo office, Mira is talking to the other Gestapo agents. She wants them to let her go to the rendezvous alone. One of the Gestapo tells her to send the message that North Star will be there.
Later, Carter meets Mira on a road. She says that she is North Star, Carter replies that he is Papa Bear. Carter and LeBeau take Mira to the tree stump tunnel entrance, and take her down the tunnel. Mira tells Hogan that Wilhelm is watching the tunnel. Mira suggests that one man go to the Gestapo headquarters to get Newkirk and the others out. Hogan says no to the plan, he is not going to risk 4 or 5 men to save 3. Hogan tells about a munitions dump. He asks her to use her and Wilhelm there. He asks Mira to send a message, supposedly to the Underground. She is actually sending it to the Gestapo. Hogan asks Kinch what she sent; Kinch replies everything that Hogan asked, nothing more or less. Hogan says that he doesn't like to tell the Gestapo everything, and pulls a pistol on Mira. Mira is a Gestapo agent. He says that he told Newkirk the emergency frequency, and that the message was to start and end 'fourscore and seven'. It was sent on the emergency frequency, but the 'fourscore and seven' were not added. While Wilhelm and the others are waiting at the munitions dump, Hogan is going to spring Newkirk.
Hogan and Carter dress up as Gestapo; They go to Gestapo headquarters with Mira. Kinch and LeBeau go to the munitions dump in commando black. Hogan and Carter ask for Newkirk, but the Gestapo will not say where he is. Hogan and Carter get the drop on the guards; they find and release Newkirk. Carter, as Gestapo Corporal Carterhof, makes a phone call to the other Gestapo agents. There is a change of plans, the guards are to leave the munitions dump. The guards at the munitions dump then get into a truck and leave. After they leave, Kinch and LeBeau plant charges. They then go and meet Hogan, Carter, and Newkirk in the woods. Kinch says 'The next sound you hear should be very loud'. Then the explosion occurs. Hogan says 'Another day, another munitions dump.' LeBeau says that we also got Newkirk back. Hogan replies with a wise guy remark.
At the end, in Hogan's office, Klink is taking Newkirk's temperature with an oral thermometer. Newkirk has no temperature; he should have been at roll call. Klink asks why he was malingering. Hogan says that Newkirk can't help it; he is crazy about the chicken soup.
