- Dressed in a German uniform for a mission, Carter finds himself serving in the German army.
- Kinch is the look-out as the remainder of the Heroes, bedecked in German uniforms, prepare to replace the guard detail at a nearby bridge. They have with them sufficient explosives to fulfill their mission of destroying the bridge. However, they are soon interrupted by a German patrol and all scatter, headed for home. Carter is too slow and is found with the explosives. The patrol assumes that he is who he pretends to be and escort him to their base. Once there, he is regarded as something of a hero for preventing an attempted sabotage and is promoted to Acting Corporal. Carter, finally able to exit the base unnoticed, returns to the Stalag and his now-quite-worried compatriots. Even after explaining the terror he felt during his stay with the Germans and his total unwillingness to return, Hogan manages to convince him that he must do so in order to reclaim the explosives, much needed to complete their objective.—Harry Tumilson
- At the start, Hogan is in a German officer uniform, Carter, LeBeau, and Newkirk are in German enlisted uniforms, Kinchloe is in a black commando outfit. They are in the tunnel talking about blowing up the Milheim railroad bridge. They all come out of the tree stump entrance, Carter first. Then, Hogan is looking at the bridge through binoculars. Kinch comes up and says that there are 4 men approaching. Hogan asks how close? Kinch says to lower his voice. They immediately take off in the opposite direction from their approach. Carter forgets the dynamite and detonators, goes back for them, and tries to carry them off. The German squad leader, with the markings of a private, finds Carter and asks him where he found the stuff; Carter says 'right here'. The German squad leader tells Carter 'good work', and to take the stuff and fall in with the rest of the squad. The squad marches off, Carter included.
Back in the barracks, Hogan, Newkirk, LeBeau, and Kinch are talking about what happened. Hogan says that they lost the detonator, dynamite, and Carter. Newkirk wants to go out and find him. Hogan thinks that Carter has been caught, and is in a Gestapo jail strung up by his thumbs.
As it turns out, Carter is taken into an office with a German Hauptman (Captain), a sergeant, and several other men. The officer asks him what happened. Carter says that he found the stuff by the bridge. What was he doing there? He was on his way to report for duty. After stumbling around a bit, Carter gives the captain his papers, identifying him as Private Hans Wagner. The papers were signed by a Major Newkirkheim. The captain asks for his orders, and Carter says that he lost them. The captain reads the identity papers, saying that 'Wagner' was on the Russian front and other invasions, and tells the sergeant that he has to experience and to make him an acting corporal.
In Klink's quarters, Schultz and Major Hochstetter enter while Klink is sleeping. Hochstetter tells Schultz to wake Klink up. Klink wakes up; what is happening? Schultz says that it is Major Hochstetter; Klink says 'heil Hochstetter'. Hochstetter tells Klink to have an immediate roll call; there was an attempted sabotage on a nearby bridge. Hochstetter asks Klink about the mesh he is wearing on his head. Klink says that it is used to stimulate hair growth. Hochstetter asks Klink if it might stimulate anything under the scalp.
Outside, Schultz lines up the men for roll call. Hogan and the others are stalling, hoping that he won't find that Carter is missing. Kinch is in Carter's usual spot, and Schultz notices that. He asks the men about Carter. Newkirk and Schultz go back and forth about 'Carter Who' and 'Carter Where'. Then Carter appears and gets in line. Schultz reports all present. Hochstetter tells Klink to have nightly roll calls.
Afterwards, in the barracks, Hogan asks about the dynamite and detonator. Carter tells them the story of what happened. Carter is tired and wants to turn in. Hogan says that he is sorry that he said that. Hogan wants Carter to go back, but Carter does not want to. Carter gives Hogan the German uniform back, and does not want to return. Carter says that he could be court-marshaled and shot in two armies. Carter wants to quit the outfit, quit the German army, and quit the war. Hogan asks how he is going to break the news to Churchill and Roosevelt. Hogan wants to have a spy in the enemy's camp. Hogan says that he will talk Klink out of the nightly roll calls. He finally talks Carter into going back. Carter ultimately puts the German uniform on and goes back.
The next day, in Klink's quarters, Hogan talks about the nightly roll calls. Hogan says that since they started, the escape committee has submitted two plans. Hogan says that Klink needs to discontinue the roll calls. Hilda comes in and says that the supply sergeant says that Schultz and Hochstetter have left the ammunition bunker and are walking here. Klink will still have the roll calls.
Outside, Carter comes in on a motorcycle sidecar, driven by another (unnamed) German private. Carter finds Hogan, and tells him that he can't find the dynamite. Hogan tells Carter that he could not talk Klink out of the roll calls. Schultz, Klink, and Hochstetter come up, Carter sees them, and Carter starts telling off Hogan to respect the Germans. He gets back on the motorcycle and leaves. Klink asks 'where does the Wehrmacht get met like that?'. Hogan says that he would hate to tell him.
That night at roll call, Carter comes in late, and Schultz reports all present. Carter says that the German unit he is with is being shipped out next week; he is not sure where, but he shows the others the earmuffs that he was issued. Carter says that he finally found the dynamite. Hogan wants to get Hochstetter out of the way. He tells Carter to take the dynamite and meet them at a certain point. Carter goes back to see a captured Betty Grable movie.
Next day, Kinch calls Hochstetter impersonating a Gestapo officer. He says that they captured two Underground agents that may be involved with the attempted sabotage on the bridge, and he is needed to interrogate them. Hochstetter leaves camp in his staff car. After Hochstetter leaves, Hogan goes to Klink's office and convinces Klink to cancel the roll calls.
That night, Hogan is in a German officer's uniform, Newkirk and LeBeau in German enlisted uniforms, and Kinch in black commando outfit. All are by a road waiting for Carter. They hear a tank coming. Carter drives a tank up, and says that they will need it as he could not find the detonator. Hogan tells Carter to drive the tank to the bridge. When they get there, Hogan tells the guards that are there to leave, that they will take over. The men plant charges under the bridge, and leave. All get in the tank, move it to a good spot, and shoot at the bridge. The first shot misses, the second shot is closer, and the 3rd shot hits something and blows the bridge. Hogan says 'nice shooting, Acting Corporal Hans Wagner'. Carter says that he had to miss the Betty Grable movie.
At the end, in Klink's office, Klink says that the Milheim bridge was destroyed. Hochstetter was in Dusseldorf on unimportant business; he is being sent to Berlin for punishment. Schultz says that the men in Barracks 9 want more hot water; Klink says no. Klink tells Hogan about the corporal that told him off the other day; he deserted. Klink says that you never know. Hogan says that sometimes it is better that way.
