- As Hogan tries to help a German scientist defect, bumbling Colonel Crittendon interferes again.
- At the start, a staff car comes into STALAG 13, carrying General Burkhalter and a visiting scientist, Dr. Vanetti. Burkhalter tells Klink that 'no one must have any idea' that Vanetti is there. Dr. Vanetti just wants quiet. Burkhalter says that it is quiet here, like a church. He tells Klink that Vanetti is to get quiet. Vanetti has brought along almost everything that he needs; he just needs paper, pencils, and quiet. He knew Fermi, Hatermann, and Szilard. Burkhalter says that Vanetti will be completely safe here.
Back in the barracks, Hogan and the men are listening in to the conversation on the coffee pot. Hogan says that we need to kill him. Vanetti is an atomic scientist. The other three names that were mentioned were also atomic scientists.
Schultz comes in saying that it is garbage day. He tells the men that an assassin, Garreau, was dropped, captured, and taken to STALAG 16. Hogan tells Carter and LeBeau that they are going out tonight. Schultz hears nothing.
That night, Carter and LeBeau bring back the assassin and Crittenden, who was also at STALAG 16. As they near the camp, Crittenden goes the wrong way and is seen by camp guards. The guards start shooting; LeBeau and Carter get back while this is going on. They come in through the outside tunnel, which has a hatch lid and is not a tree stump.
Later in the tunnel, Crittenden offers to do the assassination job. He wants Carter and explosives to help. This is not a good idea. Crittenden then wants to use a crossbow. Hogan reluctantly goes along with it. Hogan will be having dinner with Klink and Vanetti tonight; Crittenden will have one shot. Crittenden asks how he will know Vanetti. Hogan tells him that he knows Klink, he knows Hogan; Vanetti will be the one that he does not know.
Hogan goes to Klink's quarters; Vanetti is having dinner. Klink tries to get rid of Hogan. Carter starts a diversion of firecrackers outside. Klink sounds the alarm and leaves. After Klink leaves, Vanetti wants to talk to Hogan alone. He wants to get to England. He says that all information is in his head, and he can not trust atomic secrets to Hitler. Vanetti got wind of Hogan's operation through the Underground. Vanetti is standing in front of the window; Crittenden is taking aim with the crossbow from the barracks. Hogan tackles Vanetti just as Klink comes back in. A crossbow arrow goes through the open window, through Klink's cap, left of the eagle decoration, and lodges in the office door. Klink is very surprised. Hogan asks Klink if he has angered Robin Hood.
Klink calls Schultz. Klink has the hat in his hand, with the arrow still in the door. Klink asks Hogan how they knew Vanetti was here. Hogan says that they didn't, but everybody knows that Klink is here. He suggests to Klink that it may be the Gestapo. Klink starts to get worried.
Back in the barracks. Hogan tells Crittenden that Vanetti is on our side. Just then, there is an explosion in the tunnel. Carter comes up in a dirty uniform. There is some discussion as to who is in charge and what to do with Crittenden's ideas. Hogan asks what Crittenden would do if he gives Crittenden a direct order; Crittenden says that he would ignore it - he outranks Hogan by date of rank. Crittenden still wants to eliminate Vanetti. Hogan has to do some thinking.
Hogan goes to Klink's office. There are more explosions. Klink says that he discounts the Gestapo theory. Klink wants to know about the explosions; Hogan says that he discounted it.
Back in the barracks, Hogan dresses up Crittenden as a German; he tells him that he will take Vanetti on a ride, and 'let him have it'. Essentially, Hogan is making Crittenden think that he will be going for a ride with Vanetti, and he can eliminate him on the road. Hogan goes out to check the staff car to see if Vanetti is in it, knowing that it will be Klink in the car. Hogan sees Klink in the car, and tells him that Vanetti is in the compound. Hogan puts Crittenden in the staff car with Klink, making Crittenden and Klink think that the other is Vanetti.
Schultz suddenly screams that Vanetti is gone. Hogan starts to tell him why, but Schultz says that he knows nothing.
On the road, the staff car pulls over. Klink thinks that Crittenden is Vanetti, Crittenden thinks that Klink is Vanetti. They are both surprised when neither is the case. Crittenden gets out of the car and runs. Klink tells the guards to go after him, and they start shooting.
Back in the barracks, Hogan tells Vanetti that the guards had blanks. Vanetti starts to leave through the tunnel in the barracks under the bunk. Carter asks Vanetti if our side will ever come up with an atomic bomb. Vanetti says that he hopes not, because it would be too noisy. Vanetti then goes down the tunnel. Hogan says that Crittenden does not have the knack for escaping, that he probably did not get away.
At the end, Hogan, Klink, Burkhalter, and Schultz are looking down into the hole where Vanetti's laboratory used to be. Burkhalter wants to know why Vanetti can be so brainy and yet so dummkoff enough to blow himself up. Hogan wants to talk with Klink and Burkhalter about it.
