It's Hot Rod week on Tool Time, as Tim is about to unveil a big historical moment: he is going to choose the color for the convertible top! To help him choose, Sparky Henderson brings out his color wheel and a book of swatches. He chooses white, as in white-bred. But then he changes his mind just as quickly, and then again...this is going to take a while. After the intro, Jill announces she's been chosen to be on a talk show called Talk to Me. It's 1998's answer to The View. Professional, menopausal women who go on air to complain about men. Jill should fit right in. Tim would rather go pick out tops with Sparky and... something tells me he should have stuck to those plans, but he agrees to watch his wife's frivolous show. Before you thumb this down, I'm not against women having their own talk shows. What I am against is when they use them to verbally hurt men...and it's not okay when the shoe is on the other foot either! So, next day, promptly at 4:00, Tim and Sparky stop by Harry's. Tim still can't make up his mind over the damn convertible top. And as for Jill's show, Harry just happened to have a TV, so he watches it with the other guys. I sure hope nothing groin-kickingly embarrassing is going to happen. At first, Jill has nothing but good things to say about Tim, but when she learns the other women on the show have husbands just like him, she lets loose and says he's going through mid-life crisis and that he's "emotionally fragile." Marty and the guys have a good laugh at his expense.
It doesn't stop there. She goes on to talk about how Tim wanted to move everybody up to a hunting lodge, and he wanted to go into space...which I seem to recall her being very supportive of! Oh, and remember when Tim wanted to have a girl? Jill mentions that too, talking about what a "horrible burden" that was to put on her in the middle of writing her masters thesis. All her sisters sympathize with her all the way, especially when she calls Tim pathetic and stupid right then and there. So, the bitch comes home, feeling somewhat remorseful for what she said, and when Tim isn't there, she assumes he didn't watch the show. By the way, those who remember the episode "Don't Tell Momma" will be feeling deja vu about now. Tim comes home, saying he and his friends caught the show at the hardware store. Jill justifies her actions by pointing out all the times Tim verbally humiliated her on Tool Time, which he was wrong to do, by the way, but that certainly doesn't make what Jill did alright. So Tim walks away with what was left of his dignity in tact, while Jill re-watches the show and studies how much of a straight up bitch she was. Fortunately, Wilson was in his backyard juggling, so Jill tells him about her latest blunder, how she was compelled to "psycho-analyze" Tim in front of all those other successful career wives. This time Wilson didn't have to say much, as Jill realized the error of her ways on her own, and all Wilson had to do was nod. So she makes Tim his favorite dinner as a peace offering, they share their feelings...ah, but enough of that. Time for Tool Time again. Has Tim finally chosen the right color for his top? Well, yes...and no. The hot rod itself is completed, and is it a beaut! But...where is the upholstery? Turns out nothing matched, so Tim is going to start from scratch, as a big "up yours" to Jill, which was rightfully earned.
One thing before I do the critique: those freakin' Saginaw Cheese ads are not funny. Saying "cheese it's good" over and over is annoying, NOT funny. Why couldn't they change it up, like, "cheese whiz, that's good" or "Cheesus Christ, it's good" or "say Saginaw cheese!" But that would require creativity, which is not what they were going for here. As for this episode: didn't like it. Jill was a real pain in the ass, just like always, and I think whoever came up with the idea of her trying to become a psychologist needs to be kicked in the head. This addle-brained moron would make a TERRIBLE psychologist, as she causes more problems than she fixes. Hell, Tim would make a better therapist than her. All in all, Season 7 has been somewhat of a letdown. Sure, there were some good episodes like "Say Good Night, Gracie", "Losing My Religion", "Night to Dismember", "Bright Christmas", and "The Write Stuff", but it's just been so mediocre. Like they quit caring. And episodes like "Believe it or Not", "The Dating Game", "Tim 'the Landlord' Taylor", "Rebel Without Night Driving Privileges", and "Pump You Up" were total garbage. Season 8 is even worse, though. Maybe they should've stopped here. Anyway, I don't recommend From Top to Bottom, trust me on this. And if you're buying Home Improvement on DVD, I guess if you've bought the other seasons, you might as well buy Season 7 too. Again, it's not a very good season, but it's OKAY. Now on to Season 8, the final, and WORST season of Home Improvement.
