Just a few more days until Christmas...well actually, it's Jill's birthday, but it seems like Christmas. Naturally, Tim forgot about it and so Jill and Randy have a little laugh at his expense. So, what does the little woman want for her birthday? She won't say, expecting Tim to know. But at the same time, she knows he's not exactly on-the-ball when it comes to shopping for his wife, judging by the pressurized window cleaner and the "de-nubber" he got her years before. So while Tim struggles to figure out what gift to give Jill, Brad and Randy have to figure out how to buy one because they spent their allowance on baseball cards. When they see Mark counting the money he saved, they decide to play government and tell Mark he owes them "Little Brother Tax", by paying his older brothers when he's 7, and if he didn't pay, they'd hide strange animals in his bed (namely themselves). So Mark foolishly believes their ruse and pays his older brothers his Little Brother Tax. With that money, the boys buy a big bottle of disgusting black perfume. I believe it's the same brand Bart Simpson got for Marge on her birthday. As for Tim, he's noticed how much Jill is obsessing over her weight and staying fit, so he gets her a lifetime gym membership.
Next morning is the big day! Jill stumbles downstairs, feeling and looking like crap, and then Tim and the boys jump up and wish her Happy Birthday! Turns out she feels lousy after working out, and swears she will never do it again. Uh-oh Spaghetti-O's! So Tim heads off to a Tool Time location shoot at their project house, the problem of what to get Jill was still fresh on his mind. The owner of the house wasn't around, so Tim and Al push on without him. Long story short, Tim accidentally backs a truck into the front of the house. After that, he and Al dash down to a lingerie store to find that gift for Jill. Should be fairly simple, since all the women down there know Al. Turns out he often goes in there to meet chicks. After the perfume lady shows up and mentions she's not married, Al follows her to check out some samples, blowing off Tim. I'd say he's really up the creek now. So after he gets home, he talks with Wilson about his 'present' dilemma. He suggests Tim find a way to remind Jill of all the good times she's had in the past. But before Tim can make that happen, he finds out about the "Little Brother Tax" Brad and Randy made Mark pay. As punishment, they have to pay the "Large Angry Father Tax", meaning Mark gets their allowance for the next two weeks. And now, the main event! Jill's present from Tim. It's a musical tool box, and inside it: a video tape. On on that video tape: Jill Taylor, this is your life! A montage of pictures of Jill as a little girl, and even a picture of young Tim. Two naive children who would one day, many years later, be together.
There's an extra scene before the credits where Tim finds out that Jill's perfume is acid...and not the kind you drop. But syndicated viewers will miss this part. Great episode! Well written, well performed, and pretty funny in a lot of places, like Tim backing the truck into the house, and he and Al in the women's department. Classic. As for the perfume gag, I believe Home Improvement really did borrow that from The Simpsons. Remember the first season episode where Homer gives Marge a bowling ball for her birthday? Bart had also gotten her a big bottle of disgusting black perfume that Marge was reluctant to wear. Well, brilliant minds think alike...the writers', not the boys and Bart. I definitely recommend Jill's Birthday, and hopefully it can help all you stumped guy who don't know what to get your ladies for their Christmas.
