It's magic, on Fool Time. Why? Because, well, Tim thought it would spice up the show, and because I guess our special guests had to do community service of some kind. It's Penn and Teller. No B.S.! Teller proves to be an expert pickpocket. Then Penn brings out the legendary Houdini box escape trick. He coaxes Tim to get inside to check it, only for them to fasten the lid and seal him in. For his next trick, he saws Teller in half using a Binford power saw. Now I'm sure many of you know how this trick is done, and Tim gets to be the legs. Wow, those guys ARE good. And this is a lot safer than what they usually do. At home, Brad's head has swollen to the size of a blimp, being the decorated soccer champ that he is. All the babes are cruising for him, and not just the ones in his head. Marty's gotten himself an embarrassing job at the zoo, and Tim feels he's letting all 2 of his die-hard Tool Time fans down by straying away from the "basics." Opportunity knocks, or rather floods the bottom of the stairs. It's that damn hallway toilet again. Looks like Tool Time is back on track. Tim, Al and Heidi do a location show in the bathroom, fixing the toilet. Brad interrupts, looking for his earring and mousse. That kid just can't stay out of trouble.
Downstairs, Tim rolls up the old carpeting, about to lay down the new one. But first he pauses to reflect back on his 9 years of fail....er, effort, and right at that moment, Brad comes careening down the stairs, tripping over the rolled up carpet. He's in a great deal of pain, but thankfully Binford has a paramedic standing by. At first they examine Tim (force of habit), but then get to the actual patient. Down at the emergency room, Tim sits in the office, farting around with an EKG machine that would flatline every time he attached it to his head. Hardy-har-har. Brad is then brought in, having suffered a severe knee injury. He's quick to blame his father over the incident, citing Tool Time, and they bicker like children. But that's the least of their problems: the doctor says not only will Brad be unable to play soccer for a while, but he may need surgery. The boy is down in the dumps, he views his career as all over before it even begins. Days on end, he just sits around the house moping. Looks like he'll have it to himself tonight, as Tim is up for Car Guy of the Year again, and unless he has to ride with another pregnant woman, he'll most likely get the award this time. Brad has lost all faith, but maybe a talk with Wilson will help. He still blames Tim for the accident. However, as Wilson puts it, crap happens. It's not always somebody's fault. He encourages Brad to keep his chin up and consider other paths, should he no longer be able to play soccer. So later that night, Tim and Jill get home with the award: the prestigious a-cheese-meant award, a head made out of cheese. Good God. Tim and Brad get to talking. He forgives his father, realizing it wasn't his fault. Okay, good, glad that got worked out. Let's end on Tim making Brad a souped-up wheelchair. Though after that test drive, I think Tim is going to need one of his own.
Have to say, I didn't think this one was very good. It wasn't funny. The writing was lousy too, from beginning to end. I don't believe Brad would be that clumsy to have such an accident, nor would I believe Penn and Teller had nothing better to do than to be on Tool Time. As for Brad blaming Tim for the accident, I don't agree that it was Tim's fault, but what I will agree with is that Tool Time IS a stupid show. It's become a complete joke by this point in the series, just throwing it in as a non sequitur to get a few "laughs." There is NO way something like that would've lasted 9 years. Well, today it would, but not back in the '90s. So Tool Time sucks, and so does this episode. Brad's knee problems will be a running joke in the next few episodes, and it'll come to a head in "Trouble A-Bruin'" where Brad has to play on it. In short, I don't really recommend Knee Deep. It's not funny. Brad comes off as a whiny little bitch, it's contrived, poorly written and at times, poorly acted. Go back and watch something from Seasons 1-6, you'll have a better time.
