Ever been in a predicament where you're craving ice cream, but it's just too darn frozen to scoop out, and in the process you've bent all your spoons? Fear not. Tim Taylor has a solution: an electric ice cream scooper, rendered from a curling iron. How well does it work? Let's just say, he really gets to the bottom of the problem. After the intro, Tim shoots down to Harry's Hardware. The tape gets stuck in his camcorder and he needs a screwdriver. He'd just come from a 3-hour lecture at the library by Jill, and she'd asked him to video tape it. He fixes the camera and starts filming people at the store, but when Al doesn't want to be on camera, he takes it away from Tim and sets it down on a nearby shelf, as Tim regales Harry, Eddie and Al about his wife's super boring speech, and how she's the "Big Bopper of Boredom" when she talks about psychology. Harry and Eddie regale him with how monotonous and finicky their wives are too. At home, that evening, Al and Ilene come by to watch Jill's speech. It's as boring as you'd expect, but they're very moved by it. So the speech finally concludes, Jill receives a standing ovation and Tim lies about being able to watch it over and over again. But wait, this taped speech has an alternate ending, that doubles as an editorial.
That's right, Tim inadvertently hit record on the camcorder and so it taped his entire badmouthing session of Jill at the hardware store. Things quickly turn awkward, so Al and Ilene take off. Tim attempts to justify his actions by saying he was just "talking with the guys" and that Jill was never meant to hear this conversation, which she counters by saying it never should've taken place to begin with. So, with his foot still in his mouth, it's on to Rock'n Roll Day on Tool Time, building a rockin' chair! First, Tim addresses the men in the audience by asking if they go places and vent about women, and the answers he gets are divorce court and prison. Anyway, back to the project. While Al shapes the wood on the lathe, Tim stands in front of it and lectures about safety precautions: wearing loose clothing around machines...and aptly gets his shirt sucked right off of him. So while Jill goes to talk with Wilson, and ends up correcting him all the time, the boys get their hands on the infamous tape. Tim catches them and orders them to shut it off. Then, once again, he stupidly tries to defend his actions by saying it's okay for men to blab personal feelings in a public place. However, maybe he has learned a little something from his big faux pas: that talking about people behind their backs isn't cool. Randy of all people should remember that ("Fool Time"). It turns out, Jill wasn't so much upset that Tim said she was boring, so much as he was demeaning her interest in psychology. Tim attempts to atone for his misdeed by not only trying to read a psychology book, but he even shows Jill another "alternate ending" to that speech video: a scripted and poorly staged one. But the message was there: Tim apologizes for what he said, and Harry and Eddie congratulate him.
Funny and heartfelt. How many of you have been this type of a situation? You say something about somebody, and that somebody overhears the conversation, or rather sees it on tape? I guess the moral is to mind your P's and Q's, because you never know when you might be on candid camera. So, for an enjoyable romp with a great message, I say Let's Go to the Videotape!
