The Very Odd Couple.

Warning: Spoilers
It's Auto Week on Tool Time, and Tim starts things off by having Al lock his arms into an engine compartment immediately after insulting his mother. Yes, apparently he was trying to demonstrate why pistons won't work if not properly lubricated. I'd say he walked right into that one. Anyway, on the home-front, there's some bad news: Mark has the chicken pox, and since Tim has never had them, he has to leave the house for a few days. When Jill drops the bombshell that Al has offered to let Tim stay with him, he doesn't take the news lightly. It was apparently Al's way of atoning for the lubricant incident, but regardless, Tim didn't want to stay with him. What to do? Wilson suggests he be honest about it and tell Al how he feels. That's when the aforementioned flannel man stops by, even giving Tim his own initialized key. Tim bluntly states that he doesn't want to stay with Al, but for fear of hurting his feelings, he retracts that and adds "for very long" and become a burden. Burden nothing, Al was tickled pink to have him.

Tim's first evening in Al's bachelor pad got off to a shaky start, as Mr. Borland demonstrates his latest square dance steps. Fortunately, the monotony was broken up by a visitor: Cynthia, from across the hall. She somewhat subtly hints at wanting Al to come over to her place, but he blows her off in favor of spending time with Tim. See, he knows Cynthia is vulnerable, on the rebound, and he didn't want to take advantage. Well, nice guys DO finish last. Next, Al treats his guest to a special video: him at age 3. It seems his mother has the first 17 years of Al's life on twelve 8-hour videotapes, all for Tim's viewing pleasure. After a sleepless night, thanks in part to Al's snoring, it's time for Tool Time with special guests Mario and Michael Andretti. To test their knowledge of engine sounds, Tim plays sound clips of various engines, which the Andrettis name almost immediately, however they, along with Al, are stumped by the very last clip. That's because Tim pulled a fast one and played a recording of Al snoring. Needless to say, Al was pretty miffed. At home, Tim speaks of his intention to go to a hotel, of which Al is in favor. Apparently the reason he wanted Tim to stay with him in the first place was so they could get to know each other as people and become better friends. So Tim finds himself kicked out of Al's apartment, and as the two argue through the closed door, Cynthia catches wind and quickly gets the wrong impression about them. Quickly finding a way to right his wrongs, he builds Al up for her and she gets him to hear Tim out. Tim "the Matchmaker" Taylor. So he skedaddles while Al shows Cynthia his square dancing, and will more than likely go to the videotapes too. So to cap off this little adventure away from home, Tim and Jill stay in a crappy hotel and complain about it at home.

Tim and Al under one roof, hilarity and hijinks will ensue. I personally find this episode to be fun and hilarious. The jokes are funny, the story and plot are top-notch, fans of Tim and Al should definitely check it out. Unfortunately, I don't believe Cynthia is ever talked about again, so I'm guessing Al really did show her the videotapes. Oh well, it won't be long before he enters into a more serious relationship with a woman, but that's another story.
