Dead Man's Curve.

Warning: Spoilers
On Tool Time, Tim and Al are fixing creaks in old wood floors. Let's just say, the segments caps off with Al getting blasted in the face with a ketchup bottle full of talcum powder. At home, Tim tries to work on the hot rod while Brad shows off his total lack of talent in playing the saxophone. Yeah, that's been a running gag, and it lasts well into next season. Get used to it. Randy comes home, covered in snow, reporting that the McGurn boys stuck him upside down in a snow bank again. Apparently they had challenged him to a sledding race, and he lost. Randy wants to get back at them with fisticuffs, but since they're bigger than him, that might not be the smartest course of action. Tim suggests beating them at their own game, by challenging Vinnie McGurn to a rematch. He even soups up Randy's sled to ensure victory. Unfortunately, Randy is about to taste the agony of defeat, or in this case, de wrist, as when he takes the sled on a test run, he wipes out on Dead Man's Curve and sprains his wrist on a tree. Thankfully Tim was the only one home when it happened, so he takes him down to the emergency room, which is his own little Cheers: everybody knows his name. As Randy is lead to X-ray, Tim remarks how gratifying it was to be in the emergency room and not be a patient. Well, he just jinxed it, because the door smacks him right in the face, probably breaking something.

When they get home, Jill asks about Randy's arm, and Tim accidentally let it slip about how he souped up Randy's sled, adding a spoiler and whatnot. She doesn't act quite as surprised as you'd imagine, but she does nix Randy's sledding race, despite Tim's protests about when a man challenges another man, he must follow through. A talk with Wilson helps Tim to see that competition isn't everything, especially when one's life is at stake. As for Jill, she tries to talk Randy out of the race, but he feels he has to do it, mainly because he feels he's literally got the short end of the deal. He's a little guy, after all, and a little guy has got to take giant steps to get ahead. With that reasoning, Jill actually gives her blessing for Randy to go up against that muscle-head McGurn. She mentions this to Tim and asks if he can add a bigger spoiler, and the Tool Man felt as though he'd stepped into the Twilight Zone. Was this his wife? She even admits Tim was right...but won't go so far as to admit she was wrong. Eh, close enough. Anyway, it all works out. Randy challenged Vinnie, and this time he won. But then history repeats itself when Vinnie's dad challenges Tim to a race, and he accepts. The Tool Man emerges with his pride in tact, but a nice, big cast on his foot.

This one has always been one of my favorites, mostly because of the funny lines and jokes. The spirit of competition is mentioned and both the right and wrongs ways to respond are given the spotlight. You find out which is wrong the hard way. The gag of Tim down at the emergency room is repeated off and on throughout the series, including another trip down there in "It's My Party." As far as the gag about Brad and his saxophone, I think it's painfully unfunny. You know the gags of somebody trying to play a musical instrument, and they do it badly? It happens again with Jill and the piano in Season 5. Thankfully Brad eventually bails on the sax, and I guess it was all part of trying to show that you should never give up on something, even if you're not very good at it. However, you have to know your limits... unless you're Tim. Anyway, check out Slip Sleddin' Away. I dare ya.
