Well, another Tool Time's gone to pot as Tim hobbles back stage, a bucket of joint compound stuck to his foot. He's quick to blame Al for the whole fiasco. So as he chisels Tim's foot out of the bucket, Al talks about getting to meet his hero, Bob Vila, the pioneer of home repair. Speaking of which, Mr. Binford himself comes in to tell Tim that Bob will appearing on the next show. Not only that, but Binford wants to pit Tim and Bob in a game of wits, a Stump the Tool Man, if you will. Oh dear. So, Tim goes home to study various tool books to brush up on his knowledge, which might be a challenge in itself considering Bob Vila wrote most of the books. All that aside, Randy's in trouble. Again. What did he do this time? Stole some kid's shoes and filled them with cheese whiz. Gee whiz. Randy's motives were because the kid is a total geek, but Jill gives him the standard lecture and even receives a phone call from the boy's mother, saying he's coming over for a personal apology. Meanwhile, Tim comes up with a strategy to beat ol' Bob: he thinks he'll never guess what an adze is and arranges to have Jill call in and ask about it. Can't see that going wrong at all.
Curtis, the "whiz kid" drops by, Randy gives his forced apology, and Curtis seem to accept. Now this kid may seem normal, but he is as blunt as an atom bomb. Now, onto Tool Time live: Stump the Tool Man. Bob Vila gets a warm welcome from everyone, especially Al, and then they begin the call-in question & answer period, Bob of course comes out on top, so Tim decides to deploy his secret weapon: Jill. Unfortunately, the ditz misplaced the special number Tim gave her, only to find out Curtis used it to throw away his gum, and he's tying up the phone line! So finally, she calls in under a really bad fake name and asks about the adze. Feeling overconfident, Tim asks Bob to answer, and he guesses it instantly. That was the nail that broke the saw horse's back! A frustrated Tim ushers them on to the project. In a moment of distraction, he accidentally swings around a 4x8 and knocks Bob out cold! When Binford found out, he was furious and chastised Tim for sullying the company's name, and when Tim tries to blame Al for distracting him, Al shames him for having Jill call in to get an advantage, thus causing Tim to hit below the belt and insinuate that Al will never be married. So after blaming everybody but himself for the incident, Tim has a talk with Wilson. Even he knows Bob Vila! He allows Tim to realize he let competition get to his head and realize that having all the answers isn't everything. So the next day on Tool Time, on which Bob had graciously agreed to come back, Tim begins by apologizing to Al and even makes amends with Bob, who decides to keep his distance from Tim. Today's project was installing an electrical switch, and since Bob and Al were too timid, Tim agrees to do it himself...and is predictably electrocuted. What goes around comes around I guess. And to top it off, at home, Jill and the boys duck down and hide when they hear Curtis has been allowed to spend the night.
Another classic. The first of, I believe, two appearances by Bob Vila on the series. Ironically, the character of Tim Taylor was modeled after Bob Vila. Well, think Vila crossed with Daffy Duck. Al is based off Norm Abrams, Bob old assistant, but Norm was never on Tool Time. We also get our first of two appearances by that little snot Curtis. We'll be seeing him again next Halloween, and finally, the first of two appearances by John Binford, played by Noble Willingham. This episode has it where it counts: yet another scenario of Tim being bull-headed and blaming everyone else for his own mistakes, but he is quick to admit his faults, that's what being a man is all about.
