Real Men Don't Need Directions.
ExplorerDS67893 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Real men don't need directions, which would explain why they're always lost. As demonstrated on our obligatory Tool Time segment where Tim and Al are building an entertainment center, the Tool Man shows his penchant for ignoring directions by making some unplanned adjustments: a pull out tray for the VCR with stoppers on the front... of course, he neglected to put stoppers on the back, which will give that VCR quite a trip. At home, Tim just wants to watch his taped ballgame in peace, but a frantic Jill keeps nagging him to get ready for the wedding. Yep, it's Cousin Sheila's fourth time at the altar. However, Jill is confident that fourth time's the charm, and besides, she'll be there to bring Sheila luck. So after Karen comes by to babysit the boys and ruins the game for Tim, it's time to hit the snow-packed road. Apparently Tim was so confident he could find the way to the chapel in North Adams that he threw out the directions. Well, let's see how accustomed he is to navigating in a blinding snow storm. As Tim drives, Jill studies the map, and she continually looks out for some landmarks she was told were along the way, while Tim strictly pays attention to road signs. Jill demands he stop and ask for directions, but Tim is still confident. So they drive on, bickering with one another, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, until finally, they see a sign. Unfortunately, it says "Welcome to Ohio."

Under the threat of having his sport section burned, Tim finally stops and asks for directions. He pulls into Marty's mini-mart, and Marty and a cop point out the obvious that Tim is lost, then they suggest alternate routes, which of course are closed due to fallen trees and dead cows freezing to the highway. Finally, the cop gives Tim some convoluted directions and sends him on his way. One hour later, the Taylors are still on the road, and Jill has taken to the back seat to change for the wedding. The storm gets worse, so Tim pulls up at the nearest mini-mart and goes inside...surprise, surprise, it was the one he was just at. So after getting the Nomad out of a ditch, as Tim neglected to put it in park when he stopped, Tim heads home while Uncle Bill takes Jill to the wedding. The Tool Man ponders why his sense of direction was so inaccurate, and even though Wilson points out that the nose is equipped with a tiny iron compass, he says a map is still reliable. When Jill gets home, she says the wedding was canceled. Poor Sheila was jilted yet again. Despite Tim admitting his navigation was off, Jill had decided to blame the whole night on Sheila. So they enjoy what was left of the wedding cake and Tim describes how he would do a "man's wedding."

Here's a situation I think most of us can relate to: getting lost while driving somewhere strange, but rather than simply ask for directions, you decide to press on, usually getting yourself even more lost in the process. Sure now adays people have GPS and Mapquest, but back then, you had to rely on a map or vague directions somebody gave you. Even though traditionally it's the woman who begs the man to ask for directions and the man saying he doesn't need them, but it's not always the case. Because when I go somewhere with a woman and we get lost, it's usually ME saying we need to stop and ask for directions and HER saying we don't need to. So if you can relate to Tim and Jill's plight and you like road trip stories, this episode is for you.
