Kudos on every level

Just seized on the opportunity to re-view this brilliant episode (2008) for the first time since it knocked me over during the 1994 season of Homicide--and it was as beautifully acted and directed, and as keenly painful, as I remembered it. Skillful interweaving of the stories of two families cheated out of all the possibilities; stark representation of what it must be like for "laypeople" to experience the workings of a weary, slightly burned-out homicide detective squad. Why wasn't this memorable episode even nominated for a single Emmy Award? It should have captured a number of them, particularly Robin Williams, Melissa Leo, Director Gyllenhall, and the screenwriters.

Heartbreaking

The first show of the very, very abbreviated second season--which was treated more like a mid-season replacement return--of this great series features Robin Williams as the husband and father of a small Iowa family whose wife is shot and killed in front of him in a botched robbery attempt by some street kids a few blocks from Camden Yards. Besides being a crushing, emotionally powerful episode that featured some fantastic scene-work by Williams,Kyle Secor and Daniel Baldwin, this also featured one of the earliest appearances of one JAke Gyllenhaal(whose dad directed this show. Go figure!),who is,naturally, almost unrecognizable. An episode that will probably stick with you long after you see it. I know it did that for me.
