- Meldrick Lewis: [searching for a weapon or other evidence in a recent homicide] If I could just find this thing, I could go home.
- Det. Rene Sheppard: You won't find what you're looking for.
- Meldrick Lewis: What? Why not?
- Det. Rene Sheppard: It's a mystery.
- Meldrick Lewis: Huh?
- Det. Rene Sheppard: Life is a mystery. Just accept it.
- Meldrick Lewis: Yeah, well, that's what's wrong with this job. It ain't got nothin' to do with life.
- Tim Bayliss: You know who I started thinking about today? Gordon Pratt.
- John Munch: [shivering] Gordon Pratt? That little weasel who shot Bolander, Felton and Howard?
- Tim Bayliss: Yeah.
- John Munch: What the hell are you thinking about that little scumwad for?
- Tim Bayliss: Well, when he got released, uh, Pratt was found shot to death, and I was put in charge of the investigation.
- John Munch: And a swell job you did, too.
- Tim Bayliss: I never really closed that case, John.
- John Munch: [annoyed] That's what I mean, somebody shoots three of our own, they deserve to have an unavenged death.
- Tim Bayliss: You really believe that?
- John Munch: Yes.
- Tim Bayliss: You believe he deserves to die?
- John Munch: [more emphatic] Yes.
- Tim Bayliss: And that his murderer should go free?
- John Munch: Yes.
- Tim Bayliss: [Eyes downcast] You know, when I got shot, my whole perception of the universe just completely changed. But when I shot that homeless guy, that Larry Moss, suddenly, I knew what it was like to take another person's life. Suddenly I was just like the person who killed Adena Watson. See, Frank said that I would never be a good homicide detective because I didn't have the killer's instinct. Frank was wrong. You know, I always suspected you.
- John Munch: [nervous] Of what?
- Tim Bayliss: Killing Gordon Pratt.
- John Munch: [freezing, looking shocked] Why in god's name after all this time would you pull Gordon Pratt outta the dirt?
- Tim Bayliss: I don't know. It just came to my mind.
- [creepily reaches forward and strokes his hand through Munch's hair]
- Tim Bayliss: Good night, John-Boy.
- [walks away, leaving Munch glaring at the sky vengefully]
- Meldrick Lewis: It happened, Bayliss! No amount of wishful thinking or good karma is gonna change that!
- Tim Bayliss: You're such an ass.
- Det. Rene Sheppard: [Bayliss shoves Danvers head-first down the court house steps, where he collides with the railing and sidewalk] Danvers!
- Stuart Gharty: Danvers!
- [rushes forward to help him]
- Stuart Gharty: Are you alright?
- [looks up at Bayliss]
- Stuart Gharty: What are you, NUTS?
- John Munch: Since I don't practice Billie Lou's religion, I had to sign these papers to agree to raise our kids Catholic.
- Laura Ballard: [Horrified at the prospect of Munch, who is over a decade older than Billie Lou, having kids with her] ... Whoa, you mean you guys are...
- Billie Lou Hatfield: [firmly] NO.
- Stuart Gharty: [Two Baltimore homicide, Detectives Rene Sheppard & Meldrick Lewis walk slowly on a narrow city lane along the waterfront in Fells Point. Both detectives are walking slowly, heads down, searching for a murder weapon or shell casings from a recent homicide. The hour is late. They illuminate their path with flashlights] Meldrick: If I could just find this thing, I could go home.
- Laura Ballard: Sheppard: You won't find what you're looking for.
- Stuart Gharty: Meldrick: What? Why not?
- Laura Ballard: Sheppard: It's a mystery.
- Stuart Gharty: Meldrick: Huh?
- Laura Ballard: Sheppard: Life is a mystery. Just accept it.
- Stuart Gharty: Meldrick: Yeah, well, that's what's wrong with this job. It ain't got nothin' to do with life.
- [Long, slow fade]
