Honey and the Half Million
bensonmum26 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Honey has a package containing a half million dollars that kidnappers want in exchange for Sam's life.

How Brillig, O, Beamish Boy has a very different feel to it than the average Honey West episode. I don't know if director Ida Lupino (who I adore) is responsible, but there is definitely a more serious tone to the proceedings. Cheesecake is replaced with some real drama (well as much drama as you're going to find in Honey West). Solid acting, the always enjoyable fight scenes, and a clever use of Sam's glasses are highlights.

In this episode's edition of Name That Character Actor, the obvious choice is John McGiver. While I'm more familiar with him in his comedic roles, he's absolutely wonderful playing the heavy. Very menacing.

How Brillig, O, Beamish Boy

Sam has fallen for the old help a blind man out trick.

A crack on the head and he finds himself abducted.

If Honey West wants Sam back. She needs to deliver a package with half a million dollars to the baddies.

Someone else is also after that package.

Maybe a pair of glasses will come to Sam's rescue or Honey will fail to see a trap.

John McGiver gives a memorable turn as the villain. It is a brisk episode with the silliness from a vertically challenged henchman who objects to being called shortie by Sam and likes to watch television.

CREDIT IDA LUPINO AS DIRECTOR
tcchelsey29 January 2023
Actress Ida Lupino, who was a distinguished director in her own right, and an inspiration to innumerable female film makers, headed this episode, which borders on the more serious side. As the series entered mid season, this first episode of 1966 followed the previous with a more noirish formula. It may have been an experiment, hoping to increase lukewarm ratings, certainly a change of pace that kept you on your toes. The end game: Honey has to deliver a package with half a million bucks to a bunch of crooks --or Sam dies! Still there was at least one quirky character present, such as the hilarious John McGiver (as Mr. Brilling) one of the most in demand character actors in film and tv. Also in the cast is Norman Alden, long in dramatic roles and a solid heavy. In the old Hollywood department, look for western star Monte Hale as the sheriff. Hale was in dozens of westerns in the 1940s, also a singer. He got his start at Republic Pictures, the site where HONEY WEST was filmed, now CBS Radford Studios. How about that! All in all, drama wins out with some excellent acting. SEASON 1 EPISODE 17. Finally on dvd and now being rerun on DECADES tv.
