Poorly scripted segment, with sub-par guest talent
"Rock Star" is one of the worst episodes of this popular (and often re-run) Showtime skin series.
Phillip Rhys is seriously miscast as Trent, a rock guitarist visiting Cat's hotel incognito; slipping into regular Marc Revivo's uniform, he enters the resort disguised as a bellboy.
Turns out he's broke and can't even pay his hotel bills, let alone for all the goof-ball goodies he's ordered special during his stay. So Cat & co. contact his fan club, who book rooms, and then hawk all manner of real and mainly fake memorabilia attached to Trent to the feminine suckers.
Mean-spirited script poses Cat and staff as nearly abusing Trent, all because he's down on his luck. The show's promise of fun entertainment and lighthearted sex is defeated in this instance.
Rhys went on to a more high-profile TV career both in England and America (notably on the "24" and "Nip/Tuck" series), but is completely uninteresting (and unphotogenic) while still a fledgling talent here, only his accent proving authentic. Low-budget approach goes to no lengths at all to establish him as a rock talent.
Besides the boring (and overage for their roles) groupies who paw at him here, the women who go topless in the simulated sex scenes are not very exciting either. The regular eye-candy girls who work at the resort entertain him in one scene but remain decorously clothed.
Truly a waste of time.
