James Arness said in an interview that ABC was ready to renew the series, but it due to the tremendous physical demands of his role aggravating old war injury, he was forced to undergo surgery on his right leg, therefore the series was canceled. He was in constant pain particularly when mounting and dismounting horses.
Beverly Garland previously starred with James Arness in 5 episodes of Gunsmoke, and also with his brother Peter Graves in 7th Heaven.
Bruce Boxleitner became good friends with actress Beverly Garland for nearly 30 years. He later co-starred alongside her on Scarecrow & Mrs. King, though he had very few scenes with her. In 1986, Boxleitner presented Garland the Golden Boot Award. After the cancellation of Scarecrow, Boxleitner still remained close to Garland, contacting her consistently, until her death, on December 5, 2008.
