There's a new sheriff in town
kevinolzak29 October 2016
"Fastest Gun in the East" set the template for several self contained episodes (all missing Roger and Dr. Bellows) where Jeannie sends her long suffering master on some journey through time, cheaply scripted around existing sets, props and costumes. Westerns being as popular as they were, this one is already a step up from some of the more cheesy examples. Major Nelson is watching a horse opera on television, wishing he was back in the Old West, and in one blink he's the new marshal in the lawless town of Gopher Junction, menaced by the threatening six shooter of Bull (Hoyt Axton). Town banker Horace Sedgwick (Whit Bissell) invites the marshal to drinks at the Silver Dollar, where Jeannie is fashionably dressed as a saloon girl, enabling her master to shoot seven glasses with a six shooter. Cleaning up the town from the 'Unholy Ten' would prove more difficult without Jeannie's help.

Calling Dr Bellows and Major Healey

Warning: Spoilers
Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman are the only regular cast members who appear in this episode. Not the best idea, or even a particularly interesting story. While watching a western on TV, Tony says that he "wishes" he could have lived in those days. So, what else would Jeannie do, but blink him into the Old West? Tony is the new marshall, and is faced with the obvious problems. As beautiful as Barbara Eden was (and she sure was), the character could become repetitive and one-dimensional. She always jumps on the first word Tony says. She never listens, and she's jealous of any woman that looks in his direction. That started to lose its appeal while the show was still in black and white. The interactions between Tony and Dr Bellows were essential to the show. Major Healey's input was also always welcome. This episode was missing these elements, and that wasn't a good thing. Let's move on.
