Pre pilot

It's the pilot yet was redited by The Audition episode. I actually perfer this over The Audition version because it was fresh and new. The beginning of Television history made right here. Yes, it is rough and not executed well, that's what I like the process of how the show started to the last season.

Note: Lucille Ball was pregnant with Lucie Arnaz

And I love to see Desi laugh when Lucy made fun of his English, you know it was shot live like a play, she held her laughter you can also tell. As a kid, I mimicked her bit with Ricky so often. It pains me there's nothing like this anymore.

An OK Pilot for a Legendary Show
cdgrnr3 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a test for the sponsors to see if they wanted to sponsor the show. There are many differences between this episode and the show that we came to know and love. The opening is different, the settings are very different, and Fred and Ethel Mertz are nonexistent. The show starts out with Lucy wanting to get into Ricky's audition for a television show. Ricky just wants Lucy to cook and clean for him. This was the only appearance of Ricky's agent Jerry, played by Jerry Hausner. He was supposed to be on future episodes of the show, but they decided not to continue with his character. They go to what came to be known as the Tropicana Nightclub where Ricky is practicing with his orchestra. Pepeeto the clown is rehearsing his act and he injures himself. He goes to Ricky's apartment to rest, and Lucy is surprised to see him there. Pepeeto ends up driving his bike through the wall, and he is unable to perform in the audition later that night. Lucy shows up as Pepeeto and does the show with Ricky. They end up offering Lucy a television contract and she ends up declining it to be a wife to Ricky. This is not the best pilot for a show ever, but it is definitely worth watching!

The Pilot that started it all...

So, this is the pilot episode that began one of the most infamous sitcoms in television history! For that reason alone, it is definitely worth watching, but don't have too many high hopes considering this was only intended to be a sell for the series. Regardless, though, I felt the acting seemed lackluster and rather rushed, which one wouldn't assume for actors trying to get it onto the air. Many of the lines are reused in later episodes in much more effective dialogue. Overall, decent episode that introduces the Ricardos to the World!

Fortunately, the series was green-lit in spite of the flaws.

Warning: Spoilers
"I can sing! I can dance! I can tell jokes!" So says Lucy, to which Ricky obviously response, no Lucy, you cannot be in the show. But of course, for Lucy, where there's a will there's a way, and she steps in to play a clown when Pepito is taken ill. There's no Fred and Ethel in this episode, only Jerry, Ricky's agent, as well as his band.

Ricky singing is the highlight of this show as well as the performance of the band which Ricky claims in a rehearsal has no energy. Lucy is naturally funny, and her reaction to the fact that Ricky has put together their Wills is hysterical. Unfortunately, other than the Tropicana set, the production values are low.

The Ricardo apartment is cheaply put together, and there's a drawing in the background with lines of varying degrees is supposedly representing a bridge outside their window. It is also a bit crowded and messy. Fortunately, that would change. What works is the chemistry and that's obviously what got this approved to be probably the most popular series in TV history.

Pilot

An obviously pregnant Lucille Ball joins her real-life husband to make this pilot for their new show, "I Love Lucy." The episode is not very well made and lacks the chemistry that their on-air shows have. I thought the clown was pretty freaky-looking and was very glad Lucy was able to take his place!

This pilot really sets up what the show will be like. Lucy always trying to get into acting, her husband trying to keep her out of it, and them fighting and making up. I really love these two together. I've read this show was formed to save their marriage. It's so sad that the on-screen chemistry these two shared was simply that - on-screen.

Of course, I always enjoy listening to Ricky sing...

This sucked

Not airing this episode singlehandedly saved I Love Lucy. It's almost as if they did a case study about what not to do when making a sitcom.
