Inside the Actor's Studio: Robert Redford (2005)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Robert Redford is the guest in this episode of the series and as you'd expect he comes with plenty of great stories. We start off hearing about his childhood, which was a poor one and how he began acting out in school before going to college on a baseball scholarship only to be asked to leave. From here we learn about how he got into acting school and learn about his first few parts on film. From here we learn about how he got the part in BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and why the title had to be changed after he was hired. We learn that DOWNHILL RACER becoming a dud at the box office is when he first got the idea for the Sundance Film Festival. We learn about JERIMIAH JOHNSON and how the studio refused to release it and we hear why Redford turned down the part in THE WAY WE WERE. Other films discussed include ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, THE NATURAL, ORDINARY PEOPLE, OUT OF Africa, A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT, QUIZ SHOW, THE HORSE WHISPERER and AN UNFINISHED LIFE. One of the funniest stories is the making of THE STING and Redford's admission that it took him nearly thirty years before he actually watched the film. Overall, Redford is a great speaker and he has no problem keeping you entertained with his stories. He talks about why story telling is so important to him, what a character must do in order for him to want to play it and of course talks about independent films. Redford tells a great story about Paul Newman's 50th birthday but sadly THE CHASE and working with Marlon Brando is never brought up.
