Weak Episode With a Dumb Subplot
kgraovac1 November 2023
A woman shows up claiming that a New Year's Eve romp back in 1972 made Sonny a father without his knowledge. Sonny struggles over what to do but eventually grows fond of the boy, who is chubby and very shy. The B-plot has Dot bringing a mouse into the restaurant in a shoe box.

This is a very weak entry. The main plot is an attempt to bring some humanity to the Sonny character, but this is better done in small doses (See Season 1's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T"). The B-story is just dumb, giving Gail Edwards very little with which to work.

This is the only acting credit for Kourosh Dawoodi who plays Arthur. Was he the kid of one of the crew members?? He has zero screen presence and the episode could have been somewhat better with a professional child actor.

The scene where Sonny struggles to get Arthur off the couch in the lounge is the first time the show attempts any physical comedy.

It is mentioned in the script that Dot lost her father when she was a child.

Cassie makes an amusing hooker joke but Maggie gets all the funniest lines in this one ("She must be HUGE!"). Fans criticize Louise Lasser for bringing this season down - but in many episodes, her one-liners are the only thing that generates laughs.

There are several minutes of footage missing from the current print that airs on TV and streaming services: Sonny asks Dennis for advice in the kitchen; Dennis leaves abruptly in the middle of a sentence when the cooking timer goes off.

The tag scene is missing where the girls all arrive at Sonny's with a bottle of wine to cheer him up after Arthur leaves, and then a female voice calls Sonny back to the bedroom.

SONGS: Sonny sings "I Write the Songs", "My Boy Bill" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Dot sings "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot".
