Vicki's widowed father Emmitt (Richard Schaal), whom she idolizes, visits her for the first time since she moved to L. A. He immediately hits it off with Nancy, but when Vicki catches them together in Emmitt's mobile home, her illusion of him is shattered.
This is another wonderful episode, although this one goes more for pathos than comedy. Real-life father and daughter work well together.
This is the biggest part for Nancy up to this point and of course Marian Mercer handles it expertly in the dramatic scenes. There is a real sincerity in Nancy's regret at hurting Vicki. Wendy Schaal looks breath-takingly gorgeous in the trailer scene even though her character is confused and distraught.
It is refreshingly realistic to see the way Vicki snaps at everyone. Wendy plays this totally straight and not over-the-top for comedy's sake. The script expertly balances the dramatic plot with small humorous beats, like when the gals all stop and turn in unison when they hear that Nancy slept with Emmitt, or Cassie's "Keep on truckin'" line.
When Lois tells Vicki that Emmitt is still the same man he always was, she is very firm yet not harsh. The final scene between Emmitt and Vicki is short but lovely and addresses father-daughter issues in a way that's to the point and not sappy.
The current print that airs on TV and streaming services is missing about three minutes of footage:
There is a scene where Jan enters the kitchen in a rain slicker whining about the fact that a fellow student at her college referred to her as "Ma'am" that is missing.
Sonny is seen singing "I Got You (I Feel Good)" when Emmitt enters the dining room. Having the song cut kills the joke when Emmitt asks Sonny how he's doing.
The tag scene has been removed, where Nancy tries to set the record straight about her dalliance and demands it never be mentioned again. Sonny's response to this is to sing a line from "The Lady is a Tramp".
SONGS: Sonny sings "I Got You (I Feel Good)", "The Lady is a Tramp". Both are cut from the current version.
