A depressed, self-pitying Dot is hospitalized for a deviated septum and is annoyed by her terminally cheery roommate. The B-story deals with a convention of WWI veterans dining at Above the Top.
Not a very funny episode, nor entertaining one. The shows where the guest actors have more lines than some of the main cast are never really very good. This happens in both the A and B stories here.
Constance Forsland as Cindy is very cloying early on but does a turn in the middle of the episode after Dot snaps at her. Dot's guilt after being so self-centered is well-played. The ending with Dot playing the guitar also has a clever turn that saves it from being totally schmaltzy.
There are some cute bits where Cassie proudly shows off her cavity-free mouth in the dining room and everyone is impressed, and when Dot makes a reference to John Travolta.
The best part of the episode is the charades scene where Dot acts out JAWS. It's one of Gail Edwards' funniest routines in the whole series. It also makes perfect sense that Dot the actress would be so quick doing improv.
I liken this one to those several GOLDEN GIRLS episodes where the ladies encounter some elderly person who's had enough of life and wants to die with dignity. It goes more for the heartstrings than humor.
