Honestly, There Are Much Better Episodes

Episode #2. It's a fan favorite and one of the most popular of the whole series, but I've never understood its' appeal. Perhaps it's the "female buddy comedy" aspect of it, having all the characters in the same place at the same time, standing together against a common threat, etc. I just don't think it's as well-written as many of the other Season 1 shows.

The is the first episode to feature the black and white "Snow White" uniforms, with peasant-dress necklines and puffy sleeves. Jan looks especially elegant with her hair in an updo in the opening scene. Nancy comes across as needlessly insulting and harsh towards Jan as she was in the pilot. Soon Nancy will transfer her hostility to Dot.

With her husband away, Lois asks Jan to spend the night because there has been a rash of robberies in the neighborhood. Vicki and Dot want to come and enthusiastically anticipate making it an old-fashioned slumber party.

The rest of the episode then takes place in Lois' bedroom. We learn from the script that Vicki hails from Idaho and Dot is from Detroit, and that Cassie's father was a cop. Jan's hair has been curled very beautifully - Barrie Youngfellow must have tipped the hairdresser this week! Dot wants to style Lois' hair in a side ponytail to make her look younger. There are several lines in the episode that take a dig at Lois' age.

For an episode set at a slumber party and a show that was supposed to be Jiggle TV, their nightwear isn't very sexy. Cassie arrives in what looks like a flannel onesie. But later she re-enters the scene in a pair of men's pyjamas. I thought she was supposed to be the sexpot and a loose one at that. I expected her to at least have a teddy in her handbag for last minute sleepovers!

The burglary itself is pretty lame and forgettable and the actresses do their best with the silliest part of the script. Most people under 50 won't "get" the final scene in which Vicki does a Waltons-style good night roll call.
