IVANHOE – Freeing the Serfs – 1958
IVANHOE was an action adventure series starring Roger Moore as the dashing knight of old. The series ran for a total of 39 episodes during 1958 and 1959.
Sir Ivanhoe, (Roger Moore) has just returned to England from fighting alongside Richard the Lionheart, in the Crusades. Travelling to the castle of his father, Henri Vidon, he is set upon by a group of men at arms. They ask him to come and see their master, Anthony Dawson. Being somewhat outnumbered, Moore goes along to see what Dawson wants. Dawson, a swine if ever there was one, wants Moore to join Prince John's bid for the Crown. Moore needless to say refuses and heads out. Dawson now returns to dealing out punishment to a pair of serfs. The two, Robert Brown and John Pike have been found guilty of owning a bird.
Anyways, there is a quick round of jousting and some swordplay before Moore frees the two, and they all escape. Moore leads the two to his father's castle with Dawson and his men hot on the trail. Dawson turns back after Moore and company reach the safety of the castle.
Moore now finds that his father, Vidon and his young ward, Lady Rowena (Norah Grosen)are on their way to the meeting at Prince John's castle. Of course Moore now has to race to catch Vidon and Grosen. Prince John is annoyed that Vidon has also refused to join his cause. He sends his lackey, Dawson to eliminate Vidon and his party on the road back.
Moore manages the old nick of time bit and saves Vidon and Gorsen from the planned blade in the back. Vidon and his son, Moore, are happy to see each other after all these years. The Lady Rowena is also quite taken with the dashing Sir Ivanhoe.
The series is in the same vein as other 50's series like, ROBIN HOOD, WILLIAM TELL, SIR LANCELOT and THE BUCCANEERS.
