The crash was that of an F-14A of VF-51, Screaming Eagles, aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) the night of 11 July 1994. As can be seen in the clips, this happened at about 2325 (11:25pm). The crew both ejected. The RIO came down on the forward part of the flight deck. The pilot came down in the flames but was rescued.
This was during Kitty Hawk's 24 June - 22 Dec 1994 WestPac/Indian Ocean Cruise. Kitty Hawk participated in Operation Southern Watch.
The plot in this one is just barely possible. What happens when a naval ship crosses the equator is, and has been, well documented in pictures, movies and other media long before JAG went on the air. In addition, every wog has the right to refuse the initiation.
Admiral Chegwidden says that the CAG is being considered for a deep draft command, which is commanding a large surface warship. A deep draft vessel is any warship whose draft (how far the ship extends below the water line) is around 35 feet. In the U.S. Navy a deep draft command refers to commanding either a cruiser or an aircraft carrier, as they are the only types of ships with drafts that deep, though the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer comes close with a draft of 30.5 feet. Considering the CAG's experience of serving as a pilot on a carrier that means he is likely being given command of an aircraft carrier.
The cost per unit for an F-14 Tomcat was $38 million.
