President Clinton does cameo
ebertip29 May 2019
In an eerie foreboding to a later foreign embassy incident, President Clinton is shown arm-twisting the US ambassador to Peru to attend a dedication, over Harm's objections. One of the more violent JAGs with Harm wielding a Mac10 or the like. The gunnery sergeant has the right view of things and observes in his business there are no appeals.

Shoot first, ask questions later.

Warning: Spoilers
Harm and Megan head south to Peru. The episode plays out a superficial American view of foreign countries and their internal problems. Remember this was 1995 - the year of Oklahoma City and six years before the USA received its wake-up call and learned that bad things can happen in the homeland

Harm and Meg spark off each other, exploring opposing views and scenarios as they investigate the cases. As usual in JAG season one, the two main characters work well as a team. There are a few contrived scenes, and that is one heck of a big embassy!

"That's a top of the line vest. It will stop a nine-mill at point-blank range."

"What if someone fires at my head? "

"Duck, ma'am."

The set-piece main "battle" plays to a few tropes but the overall summary is an enjoyable 43 minutes of 1995 hokum.

NO TAINT OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Warning: Spoilers
An excellent and realistic (as far as I can discern) portrayal of Marxist terrorism and one in which, mercifully, American imperialism is, for once, not to blame. The body count is relatively high and the terror is as realistically depicted as possible on the small screen given the format constraints. Some interesting characters turn out to be villains, defying the all too common gender and sociological one-dimensional media depictions. In fact, this episode takes those same stereotypical assumptions and turns them on their collective head. Sad and scary and disturbingly true to life.

"War Cries"

A good episode with a few surprises to keep everyone guessing until near the end.

Harm and Meg are in Lima, Peru, where a Marine corporal has shot an intruder coming over the embassy wall. The corporal swears the intruder was shooting at him. It turns out that the dead man is actually a boy, maybe or maybe not affiliated with the Shining Path terrorist organisation. Harm and Meg must get to the bottom of the shooting, even as the Shining Path plot another attack, and even with Americans persona non grata in the city. John Wesley Shipp plays a hard-nosed Marine Corps gunnery sergeant straight out of Hollywood Central Casting.

A few scenes were lifted from the Harrison Ford movie Clear and Present Danger, and President Clinton has - by my count - his second cameo appearance, but this one is a blink and you'll miss it apperarance.

almost a duplicate of a movie story

The movie "clear and present danger" was released in august 1994 and had taken place in bogota colombia with pretty much the same kind of rooftop ambush scenes as this episode which took place in lima peru ... it looks very much like the writers stole from tom clancy
