A lame horse forces Jess Harper to seek refuge at Olive Carey's ranch where she
lives with her granddaughter Marlene Willis. Unfortunately who else decides to
take refuge there is the Matt Dyer gang one of whose members Harry Lauter has
some history with Robert Fuller.
The always reliable Lloyd Nolan plays Dyer an old time desperado with the reputation right up there with James and Younger gang leaders. He says that outlawry is a business with him and he kills only when necessary. Nolan also has a sadistic streak in him. Especially regarding two hostages in brings in tow, deputy Charles Robinson and bank president Vinton Hayworth.
Nolan also does a rather ungallant thing in regard to the women hostages he has during the final showdown.
Lloyd Nolan and Olive Carey make this episode one to remember. Lloyd Nolan was never bad in any role he played. And Olive Carey is in a part similar to what she played in The Searchers, a tough old pioneer woman who's seen it all.
