Inheritance (1954) and The Well (1955) were filmed as pilots for Lassie (1954), aka "Jeff's Collie," which was the title of the series when the episodes starring Tommy Rettig were put into syndication.
In Inheritance (1954) and The Well (1955), Lassie is portrayed by Pal, who also starred in the MGM Lassie movies of the 1940s to early 1950s, such as Lassie Come Home (1943) and Hills of Home (1948).
Gramps is fond of using the term 'pusillanimous' when angrily casting aspersions on someone. In this episode, he uses the term frequently, even influencing Jeff to use it. While a pejorative, it's meaning denotes someone who at best is timid, at worse cowardly. It derives from a commingling of the Latin words for little, i.e. 'pusillus', and spirit or mind, i.e. 'animus'.
The lawyer, Mr. Saunders, is played by Hugh Beaumont, who in just a few years after appearing in this role would star in another series revolving around the exploits of children, a role he is perhaps best known for: Ward Cleaver of the TV series Leave It to Beaver (1957).
